It all started in the 90s, when David, together with his friend Vladimir Gutsaev, insisted that the Georgian teams remain in the championship of the Soviet Union. At that time, practically all of Georgia supported its president in secession from the USSR.

Kipiani believed that separation from Soviet football would lead to terrible consequences. As it turned out later, he looked into the water.

It is also noteworthy that in the 90s (when Kipiani moved to Cyprus to train the Olympiacos team), David opened his own restaurant called Russian. Unfortunately, soon the institution is closing. The reason was the fight between two Russian visitors. It all ended with one of them writing a statement to the police, where he called his opponent "Russian mafiosi." When the police arrived at the scene, the owner of the restaurant, David, came under the "distribution". He was taken away in handcuffs and kept behind bars for three days. After this incident, the police apologized for it. David decided to close the restaurant.
