Igor Petrov (photo below) is a Soviet and Ukrainian professional ex-soccer player who played in the position of the central midfielder and striker. Biography
Igor Petrov was born on January 30, 1964 in the city of Gorlovka, Donetsk region, Ukrainian SSR. Since childhood, he began to be interested in football - he played football with yard children, and dreamed of becoming the great scorer of the Soviet Union. In 1973 he began playing for the city’s children’s team, later he played for the Kocherga mine team Gorlovka (1979).
In 1981, Shakhtar Donetsk signed a professional contract with Igor. Soon, a young football player makes his debut in the USSR championship. As part of the Pitmen, I. Petrov won the 1983 USSR Cup and won the USSR Super Cup (1984). In total, he played 331 matches for “moles” and scored 84 goals in official meetings. Here he was one of the best players - he was included in the list of 33 best football players of the Ukrainian SSR (in 1988 he took second place), he was recognized as the top scorer of Ukrainian football and Shakhtar Donetsk. After ten seasons spent at Shakhtar, Igor Petrov left for Israel, where he signed a contract with Beitar.
Career in Israel
In 1991, I. Petrov moved to Tel Aviv, where he found work in the Beitar club. The head coach of the team Yitzhak Shum attracted a Ukrainian to the club on his own initiative. The fact is that Petrov became the object of his interests after the May games of 1991, when they played Spartak and Shakhtar in Moscow. As a result of the debut season of the Israeli league, Igor Petrov scored 10 goals, and the team took fifth place. Then a serious conflict occurred inside the club, after which all the leading players left the team. Yitzhak Shum also left, because he found a job in the Israeli youth team.
In the 1992/93 season, Beitar played indecently badly and was the worst team in the league.
Career for the national team
In the youth team of the USSR until the age of 19, Igor became the bronze medalist of the European Championship. In 1983 - a participant in the final world championship among youth. However, Igor remained the best and forward and midfielder in the team. As a result, Beitar flew into the lower division, after which the Ukrainian left the team himself.
Igor Petrov spent the 1993/94 season as part of Maccabi Ironi from the Israeli Premier League. Here, the Ukrainian playmaker took part in 34 matches and scored 8 goals in his statistics.
