Astronaut Biography

Atkov Oleg Yuryevich was born in 1949. He was born in the territory of modern Samara region, in the village of Hvorostyanka. Soon his parents moved to Kherson. There he graduated from high school.

I tried to enter a medical institute, but did not score the required number of points. Therefore, he had to be content with education at a medical school. At the same time, he began to work in the medical unit as a preparator at the local cotton mill.

In 1967, he nevertheless became a student at the Crimean Medical Institute in Simferopol. In his student years he met his love. Married, moved to Moscow. There he was already graduating from Sechenov Moscow Medical Institute. In 1975 he graduated from the residency.

In 1978, he began his official professional career at the Myasnikov Institute of Clinical Cardiology. At first he held the post of junior research assistant. In 1982, he went on promotion and became a senior research fellow. Actively engaged in scientific research, received the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences. He has written over 150 scientific papers.

Atkov Oleg Yuryevich, whose biography was closely related to medicine, in 1975 received an offer to undergo examination at the Cosmonaut Training Center. In orbit, experienced doctors with an inquiring mind were required.

A year later it became known that he was admitted to a specialized detachment of cosmonauts. In parallel, he successfully passed a medical commission at the Institute of Biomedical Problems. It is noteworthy that his official representation in the cosmonaut squad did not take place, because he did not want to finally go to work at the institute. But at the same time he did not stop training and prepare for a potential flight into space.

Orbital Voyage

In the late 70s, Soviet scientists decided to investigate how flights into space affect the body of an elderly person. It was decided to send the famous cosmonaut Konstantin Petrovich Feoktistov, who was 56 years old at that time, on a trip. He had already been in space in 1964. Atkov Oleg Yuryevich was supposed to observe the state of his body. The hero of our article began to train hard at the Cosmonaut Training Center.

At the last moment, the flight almost crashed. It became known that Feoktistov exacerbated a chronic disease, and his candidacy disappeared. But Atkov was already ready to fly. The management decided to appoint him as a cosmonaut of the All-Union Cardiology Center, which was based at the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences.

In 1983, he was included in the crew of the expedition going to the Salyut-7 orbital station. Atkov received the post of astronaut-researcher.

First flight

In his first and, as it turned out, the only flight, Atkov Oleg Yuryevich set off on February 8, 1984. He arrived safely at the Salyut-7 orbital station. In total, I spent almost 237 days outside the planet.

Serious research tasks confronted Oleg Atkov. The astronaut checked the modern equipment, as well as the devices that were necessary for a reliable assessment of the health of the astronauts. He carried out several unique scientific experiments in orbit, the results of which were then studied on Earth.

After returning, Atkov Oleg Yuryevich, whose photo is in this article, continued cooperation with the Institute of Clinical Cardiology. Soon he received the post of head of the laboratory. He was engaged in functional research methods.

Scientific work

1986 became significant in the career of Atkova. He defended his doctoral dissertation. And a year later he was appointed head of the department specializing in new methods of diagnosis and research.

At the same time, he was an active teacher. Since 1991, he collaborated with the Russian State Medical University. He headed the department of diagnostic methods at this university.

It is known that today he specializes not only in clinical, but also in pedagogical work. Continues to study space medicine and physiology. For example, he took an active part in experiments on the Kapler parabola, which were carried out on modern supersonic aircraft.

In the early 90s, he decided to do publishing work. He began to publish a specialized magazine "Visualization in the clinic." He is still its chief editor.

In the late 90s, he received the post of head of the department of new diagnostic methods at the domestic cardiology research and production complex of the Federal Ministry of Health. In 2000, he became president of the Russian Telemedicine Association, a science that uses advanced computer and telecommunication technologies to exchange all kinds of medical information. At the moment, this segment of healthcare is one of the most promising, it accounts for up to 20% of financing in the world.
