The Tver Local History Museum is part of the united historical and architectural space of the ancient city. The museum has a long history, but, unfortunately, during the war years, most of the antiquities were lost. Currently, the museum is under restoration, citizens and guests of Tver are looking forward to the opening of the updated halls.
Short story
The Tver Regional Museum in 2018 turned 152. It was opened in 1866 in the building of the former male gymnasium. At the end of the 19th century, it was believed that this museum is one of the best places where a large collection of antiquities is collected. Local crafts were widely represented at the exposition, as well as numerous samples of new industries coming from factories and plants in the Tver province. Before the revolution, the funds of the "ancient storehouse" totaled more than 14 thousand unique items.
The Tver Historical and Local Lore Museum after 1917 repeatedly changed its location and name. From 1937 until the start of the war, the museum was located in the Travel Palace; by the beginning of 1941, over 100 thousand rarities were kept in the museum’s funds. Destruction and occupation destroyed 95% of the milestones of the collection's historical funds, some were irretrievably lost, some were exported outside the country.
In 1977, the Tver Museum of Local Lore became the head institution of the united historical, architectural and literary museum. In addition to fixed assets, the agglomeration includes 11 branches. Today, TCM is located on the street. Soviet in the building of the former real school. Since 2006, the association has included 32 branches, funds store more than 400 thousand items.
Exposition
The Tver Local History Museum is visited by about 55 thousand people annually. The main exhibition is located in 15 rooms. Sightseers can familiarize themselves with the past and present of the region, employees carefully store both ancient finds and modern material evidence of life.
Unique exhibits are presented in the halls; many are fascinated by the beauty of church utensils richly decorated with precious metals, stones and the artful work of ancient masters. No less interesting is the unique dress-uniform that belonged to Empress Catherine II. Special attention is paid to the sarcophagus found during excavations at the Iversky burial ground, carved from monolithic limestone.
A large exposition is occupied by the history of the Tver region, uniting the period of the 17-19 centuries. In the halls are presented household items from noble and merchant estates, peasant houses, as well as the products of the first factories and plants. In the hall dedicated to the period of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, the feat of the Tverites at the front, the period of occupation and victory over the enemy is highlighted.
One of the halls of the Tver Museum of Local Lore is dedicated to the local native, O. G. Makarov, one of the first cosmonauts. The public can study the model of the descent module of the Vostok spacecraft and see the real spacesuit of cosmonaut Makarov.
The exhibition hall of the museum of local lore constantly updates the exposition and invites residents and visitors to various exhibitions. The aquarium hall presents to the public exotic species of fish.
