In the center of Nizhny Tagil, on the way to Galyanka, is Fox Mountain. There are several versions regarding its name. The first of them says that once in these places there were a lot of foxes. Another version claims that the walking pillars of smoke from the factory chimneys resemble fox tails. Which version is more believable - decide for yourself.
Fox Mountain (Nizhny Tagil)
The townspeople usually call it Bald Mountain. As it turned out, it is part of a volcanic crater. It was created by igneous rocks (trachytes). In this regard, the most logical and popular explanation for the appearance of this unusual name is the following - “fox” - comes from “bald”. The fact is that on the mountain, except for grass, practically nothing grows.
Tagil residents say that Fox Mountain is an extinct, and very ancient volcano. This can be believed, since the Ural Mountains are a very ancient massif. They appeared as a result of the platform shift, and it is likely that there was seismic activity and volcanic activity in these places.
Fox Mountain, according to tourists who have been here, as if created for social life. This remnant of the volcano, which died out about three hundred and sixty million years ago, does not store anything of value in its bowels. True, modern scientists are rather skeptical about such observations of their colleagues. They note that today it is known for certain that Fox Mountain is a magmatic formation. It requires additional research using modern equipment.
Good location
The location of this mountain is really very good. Nearby is a pond, from the top offers an unusually beautiful view of the city. At its very base is a market that occupies a very decent area.
Chapel
At the very top of this mountain is a modest chapel. Historians claim that it was built in 1818. She once had a fire bell for emergency notification of all emergencies in the city. At that time it was very convenient, as Fox Mountain is visible from the farthest points of the city.
At first, a small hut appeared here - a wooden watchtower, in which sentinels served day and night.
At the beginning of the XIX century, the building was replaced by a stone tower. Unfortunately, the author of this structure remained unknown. On a cast iron plate, a carved date of construction was preserved.
Later, the tower began to play the role of a fire tower. In the event of a fire, they beat it in a bell cast from bronze.
In the 30s of the XIX century, an observatory was built near the tower to observe Halley's comet. It was a pavilion mounted on a rotating platform. At first glance, it resembled a hut on chicken legs. Today, only a massive cast-iron pedestal has been preserved from it.
Chapel in the 20th century
Since October 13, 1943, the tower on Fox Mountain has become an architectural monument, subject to protection and systematic overhaul. The head of the city software department was obliged to restore the tower within a month, and then to carry out regular repairs, without rebuilding anything in the building.
