The northern cemetery of Rostov-on-Don is one of the largest cemeteries in Europe and in the European part of Russia. It takes the second place after the South St. Petersburg cemetery. The area of the necropolis is about 400 hectares. It is divided into 225 sites, each of which contains from 1, 000 to 3, 000 grave burials. Every year, the cemetery increases by approximately 9, 000 graves.
In recent years, the acute problem of lack of free space for new graves has arisen. The city leadership occasionally raises the question of closing the Northern cemetery for burial, but the opening of a new one in the city has not yet been prepared, and burials continue here. Currently, the Northern Cemetery is the only public cemetery in Rostov-on-Don, where burials with a coffin and ashes are buried in urns.
Description
The northern cemetery of Rostov-on-Don was opened in 1972. About 500 thousand people are buried here.
