Dmitry Shmelev was born on January 10, 1926 in the capital, Moscow, then the Soviet Union. His father was a famous doctor, academician of sciences and director of the institute. Dmitry Nikolaevich studied well and therefore graduated from school as an external student, later he entered MGIMO, having studied there for 3 courses, transferred to Moscow State University as a philologist. In 1955 he wrote a dissertation.
He was a teacher in high school, he also taught at several reputable institutes. His most famous monograph was written in 1973. In 1984 he became a corresponding member, and in 1987 - a full member.
His role in science
In the development of Russian lexicology, as well as theoretical semantics, Dmitry Shmelev played a rather important role. His monograph on "Problems of semantic analysis of vocabulary", which he wrote in 1973, is most famous. He was the author of a university textbook on lexicology. In addition, he studied Russian syntax, studied the historical evolution of grammar, Russian lexicology, but he paid more attention to the study of the general problems of stylistics and styles of fiction.
