Back in 2007, Britain alone used 10.6 billion plastic bags a year, and the world was on the verge of an anti-plastic revolution.
The movement’s leader, designer Anya Hindmarch, released her bag, “I am not a plastic bag, ” for 6 euros, created for charity and seen by celebrities such as Keira Knightley, Reese Witherspoon and others. This marked the beginning of the ubiquitous distribution of the canvas bag, where tens of thousands of people stood in a line that went beyond the supermarket in which it was first put up for sale, trying to get this eco-friendly model.
"I'm not a plastic bag"
Since then, our attitude towards plastic waste has changed, and simply finding ways to avoid overuse of plastic is no longer enough. “When my development was still in the project, someone told me“ I’m not a plastic bag ”: like when you throw away something plastic, it doesn’t disappear anywhere, ” says Hindmarch, “so I couldn’t throw these words out of heads."
And Hindmarch is right, nothing disappears. We are not always very well informed about where our waste goes, and not all of them can be recycled. “I think that if you don’t gather people and show them how terrible it is, ” she explains, “it’s impossible to influence the changes.”
Production technology
The fabric on the new brand bag may look like cotton, but the key lies in the name. Instead of using primary plastic fibers, "I am a plastic bag" is made from yarn obtained from recycled plastic bottles. To keep your items wet during the rain, the bag has a waterproof coating, which is obtained from an equally unusual source. Moisture protection is made from the windshields of old cars, and, according to the brand, they are the first to use this technology.

The first to be released is a bag of two shades of carbon gray with a geometric print, which will cost about 830 euros. It took two years of research and development to create the material for the new bag. For each big bag, 32 half-liter plastic bottles are spent, and Anya Hindmarch says that she will not earn on sales.
This coated fabric is currently manufactured in Taiwan, a country with some of the most efficient recycling systems in the world. There is currently no way in Europe to recycle plastic waste in the same way, but the brand hopes to change that by finding a partner factory in Italy to help production in the future.
