Imagine that you live in a city without the sun. This does not mean that the streets are completely dark. Everything is a little different. It’s just that the city is surrounded by a ring of mountains that cover the sun itself, so you don’t see it at all for several months of the year. It would seem that this is a minor inconvenience, however, psychologists say that if a person is deprived of contact with a celestial body for a long time, this significantly reduces his emotional background. However, the residents of Ryukan found a way out …
The influence of the sun
The sun is of great importance for our well-being, both physical and mental. Thanks to him, we get vitamin D, which is so necessary for us, which helps to prevent rickets in children and thinning bones in adults. In addition, our eyes need sunlight, because without it, the so-called yellow spot or central field of vision degenerates.
As for mental health, a shortage of sunlight reflects on us with the appearance of chronic fatigue, depression, irritability and a decrease in the general tone of the body.
We are forced to save power, which affects our activity and motivation.

One way or another, but for a long time without seeing the direct rays of the sun, we get used to living in a subconscious expectation, and it becomes the background of our mood.
This is exactly what happened until recently in the Norwegian city of Ryukan.
Mirror city
This small town is a three-hour drive from the cat Oslo - the capital of Norway. Ryukan is considered the darkest city on earth. It is named after a waterfall with a height of 104 meters and "working" for the production of electricity.
Only 3, 386 people live in Ryukan itself, but they did not remain forgotten and left face to face with their problem.
But it really exists - from September to March, for five months, direct sunlight does not come here.
This is due to the mountains surrounding the city. In addition, in December and January there is no sun at all, as, indeed, throughout Norway.

However, the problem was solved in 2013 using a system of mirrors that capture the sun's rays and direct them to the city streets. This costs a decent amount of NOK 5 million annually.
