In the Gagarinsky district of the north-west of the capital, on the banks of the Moscow River, St. Andrew's Embankment is located. It represents the distance between two other Moscow embankments: Pushkinskaya and Vorobyovskaya. The boundaries between them are indicated by two bridges: the Andreevsky pedestrian bridge and the Luzhnetskiy bridge, on which the metro passes.
Location
St. Andrew's Embankment is located on the right bank of the Moscow River. This is the north-west of the capital, near the Sparrow Hills. Gagarinsky district, in which it is located, includes the territory from Vernadsky street to the third transport ring. Its length is not so great - 1.2 kilometers. The closest metro stations are Vorobyovy Gory, located at the end of the street, and Leninsky Prospekt, located one kilometer from it.
The distance from the embankment to the Kremlin is about five, and to the Moscow Ring Road - about 11 kilometers. The embankment is located between the Moscow River and the Vorobyovy Gory, on which there is a forest that is part of the Vorobyovy Gory nature park. On its territory there are two ponds - Big and Small Andreevsky, they are located along the Andreevskaya embankment. Nearby there is a picnic area, a beach. The entire area of the promenade is equipped for a comfortable stay in the fresh air.
The large forest area of the Vorobyovy Gory natural park is a unique phenomenon. Five kilometers from the center of the giant metropolis is a forest located on the hills, the highest of which is more than 80 meters. It offers an excellent panorama of Moscow. There is an observation deck and an aviary with birds.
Appearance story
The Andreevskaya embankment of the Moskva River is named after the Andreevsky Monastery, as well as the settlement and several streets bearing the same name and located here in 1902. It was at this time that the embankment began, its length was originally 338 meters.
Until 1970, stone and wooden houses were located here, which were mostly demolished. A building with an adjoining territory belonging to the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences was built here.
Monastery
There is a monastery on the territory of modern Andreevskaya Embankment. It was built in the XIII century, but the first documentary information about it appears only in the XIV. Until XVII, it was known as the Transfiguration Desert. With the beginning of the construction of a temple dedicated to the holy martyr Andrew Stratilat, he received his real name. Construction was completed in 1675. The temple was named after the retreat from the walls of Moscow of the Crimean Khan Hazi Giray with an army. This happened on the day of the celebration of the memory of this saint in 1591.
Here in 1648 the Teacher Brotherhood was formed, which included 30 of the most literate monks gathered from all over Russia, they translated church books, taught philosophy and rhetoric, and taught those who wanted to read and write. Subsequently, a religious school was opened here, on its basis in Moscow two higher religious institutions were formed: an academy and a university.
After the transfer of the theological school to the Zaikonospassky monastery, an almshouse was opened here, in which care was taken for foundlings. After its closure in 1731, promiscuous women were kept here who were engaged in weaving ropes for the admiralty.
The monastery was closed in 1923. At present, it does not work, but they plan to open it, but for now the patriarch’s courtyard, workshops in which various church utensils and the library of the Synod are located are located here.
St. Andrew's Bridge
The bridge connects the left and right banks of the Moskva River in the area of Andreevskaya Embankment. He, like everything in the area, is called Andreevsky. It connects Frunzenskaya with the end of Pushkinskaya and the beginning of Andreevskaya embankments. In 1905, on the site of an old wooden bridge, according to the project of the famous architect Pomerantsev and engineer Proskuryakov, a stone bridge was built, which after a small reconstruction still exists today.
It used to be a railway bridge. Now it is fully handed over to pedestrians. Tourists and Muscovites are very fond of walking on the bridge. This place is a favorite place for young people who come here to see the views and have a photo session.
Hurricane in Moscow
The hurricane that swept through Moscow on May 29, 2017 on Andreevskaya Embankment caused a lot of trouble. Trees were felled, which were pulled straight from the roots. Heavy rains exacerbated the picture. In two days, about a third of the monthly rainfall fell. Wind power reached 16 m / s. This flurry threw a gazebo on Andreevskaya Embankment, killing two people.
