History

The Central Museum of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation was created at the beginning of the 20th century, or rather, the 1919 exhibition in Moscow can be considered the first prerequisites.

In 1919, the first military exhibition dedicated to the Red Army was held in the Soviet Union. The exhibition was attended by V. Lenin, who later gave an indication that it was necessary to create a museum exhibition dedicated to the life and development of the army, which the whole country should be proud of.

In 1921, the exhibition-museum was transformed into a museum, which was located on Vozdvizhenka, 6 until 1928. The most striking event of that period is considered to be an exhibition dedicated to the fifth anniversary of the Red Army, which was visited by more than 100 thousand people who came both in groups or individually.

In 1924, the museum was given the name Central, in 1951 it became known as the Museum of the Soviet Army, then in 1965 the army began to be called the Armed Forces, as a result of which the name that existed until the collapse of the USSR was changed again. Already in 1993, a new name was formed - the Central Museum of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

In 1965, a new building was specially built for him, where it is located to this day.

All materials are arranged in chronological order to make it easier for visitors to navigate. It all starts with the history of the creation and development of the army and navy before the revolution of 1917 (during the Soviet period, these materials were not presented, since pre-revolutionary Russia was not taken into account). Next are the halls telling about the army and troops during the Civil War, during the Second World War. Then there are halls about the post-war period, when the situation in the country was very difficult, but there should always be weapons, and finally, halls about the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

An open-air exhibition is a technique and a weapon that was once used by the Russian troops, some of them are outdated in technical terms, some have become unusable, and all this can be seen with your own eyes. There are:

  • Armored vehicles.

  • Airplanes and helicopters.

  • Navy technique.

  • Engineering engineering troops.

  • Artillery systems.

The Central Museum of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation provides an additional opportunity for visitors to get acquainted with the clothing fund, which presents more than 30 thousand items in the form of uniforms, equipment and insignia. For example, you can see Zhukov’s tunic, Frunze’s personal belongings or the reconnaissance cloak of Kuznetsov.

In addition to the clothing stock, there is also a photo fund, where more than 100 thousand photographs have been collected. They depict heroes, generals, marshals, designers and engineers of military equipment. Some of the pictures are amateur, people who have made a great contribution to military development are captured in an informal setting.
