A bit of history

This is a fairly ancient settlement that grew on the industrial rise of the entire Ivanovo region (XIX-XX centuries). The first mention of Kineshma dates back to the 15th century. In the following centuries after its inception, although Kineshma was enriched, it remained a settlement (rural settlement). The status of the city received only in 1777 during the period of Catherine’s urban reforms. At that time, it was already a large county center. Numerous stone churches and temples were erected here, large marinas were built on the Volga. At that time, linen manufacture was also operating in the city.

In the process of developing textile production (XIX century), Kineshma becomes an important point of export of products. The second largest city (after Shui) in the Ivanovo region, the city becomes in the middle of the century. Own textile production began to actively develop here.

In 1871, a railway was opened to Aleksandrov and Ivanovo-Voznesensk, and Kineshma became an important river port of the middle lane throughout the country. The city actively grew until the mid 80-ies of the XX century.

In recent years, the times of the Soviets, machine building and the chemical industry have successfully developed here. But over more than 30 years, the population has decreased by almost 15% (from 105 thousand to 85 thousand people).

From Moscow to it, the distance is 400 kilometers (northeast direction from the capital), from the city of Ivanovo to Kineshma - 100 km.

Churches and cathedrals

  1. Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (construction of 1805). This is a unique monument combining early classicism and baroque elements in its design. Since 1995, the building has been renovated and returned to believers.

  2. The complex of churches of the Nativity of Christ and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Assumption Church was built in 1747 in the Moscow Baroque style at the expense of parishioners of the city of Kineshma.

  3. Trinity Assumption Cathedral. These are two churches - Trinity (construction of 1838) and Assumption (1745), as well as the bell tower, established in 1798. Both temples located nearby are surrounded by a common fence.

  4. The ensemble of the Ascension churches is a complex of structures: the Zlatoust church (1760), the Church of the Ascension of the Lord (1799). This complex is located on the site of the Widow Monastery, which was founded in honor of the events of 1609 (the struggle of the inhabitants of the city with the Poles and Lithuanians).
  5. Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior (building 1694). This place housed the male Transfiguration Monastery, located in the district (the right bank of the Kineshemka River), in the rural settlement of Spassky. The church was returned to believers in 2000 after restoration.

Museums

Drama Theater named after A.N. Ostrovsky

Where is Kineshma located? Where there is the oldest provincial theater in Russia, opened in December 1897. The creation of this theater is associated with the name of the great playwright Alexander Nikolayevich Ostrovsky.

For two decades, his life was closely connected with the Shchelykovo estate (Kostroma) and Kineshma, where he served as the head of the Zemstvo assembly, and was also an honorary magistrate. Help in this matter was provided by the widow of the writer M.V. Ostrovskaya and his brother M.N. Ostrovsky. In addition, the playwright’s wife gave the museum a portrait of A. N. Ostrovsky by A. Rylov. This painting is still kept in the museum located in the theater. The exposition reflects the entire history of the development of this theater.
