In the north of the European part of Russia is the Arkhangelsk region, the area of which is comparable with France or Spain. Arkhangelsk and its attractions

Solovetsky Islands

Once the Solovetsky Monastery was the most powerful fortress on the entire northern coast of Russia. And in the twentieth century, it turned into a very sad place - a special regime camp, through which tens of thousands of people passed. At least 5, 000 of them were executed here.
In addition to the monastery, the Solovetsky Islands are known for their many monuments of archeology. So, here were discovered ancient pagan shrines, unique stone labyrinths and other structures dated II-I millennia BC.
City Velsk
The small town of Velsk on the banks of the Vagi River has been known since 1780. Several famous names are associated with its history: the geneticist G. D. Karpechenko, the writer I. N. Molchanov, the geographer N. P. Maltsev, the architect N. N. Pomerantsev and others.
The sights of Velsk in the Arkhangelsk Region are, first of all, dozens of architectural monuments. Here, although there are no outstanding architectural masterpieces, the historical buildings of the central part of the city are perfectly preserved. On the streets of Velsk you can see many beautiful wooden houses of the second half of the XIX century. Well, the Assumption Church, built back in 1796, can be considered the most remarkable city building made of wood.

City Mirniy
Mirny is a settlement with a special status of a “closed city”, which was founded in the second half of the twentieth century. A few kilometers away is the Plesetsk cosmodrome. Therefore, all the sights of the Peaceful Arkhangelsk region are somehow connected with the process of space exploration.
In the city itself there is nothing remarkable. It is built up with typical panel houses of the Soviet period. There is a version that through this area at one time Mikhail Lomonosov walked on foot, heading to Moscow.
The city is decorated with monuments dedicated to the space launches of Soviet and Russian satellite devices.
