The Art Museum (Sochi) has been operating since 1988 and is located in a building with a unique architecture resembling Greek temples. The collection includes more than one and a half thousand paintings and objects with high artistic value.

History

The Art Museum (Sochi) is based on the basis of the City Exhibition Hall, where works of art were exhibited. The building was erected in 1936, designed by the outstanding architect I.V. Zholtovsky. For many years, the building housed the administration - the City Committee of the CPSU.

Since 1971, the premises were given over to the museum exposition in order to preserve the artistic values ​​and history of Sochi. In 1972, reconstruction began, the building received federal status as a monument of architecture. During the period of restoration work, scientific and exhibition activities continued.

In 1988, according to the order of the Ministry of Culture, the Exhibition Hall was transformed into an Art Museum. Today, the museum's territory covers an area of ​​about 0.67 hectares, 1537 square meters have been allocated for halls with a permanent exhibition, and 200 square meters of storage facilities are given. The building, decorated with a portico with columns at the entrance, has three floors with high ceilings and spacious exhibition halls, which present unique works of art.

The Art Museum (Sochi) has a collection of 5054 items, it presents canvases in different genres, techniques and the manner typical of the time in which they were created and showcase the best works of artists - witnesses of history. The chronology of materials begins in the 2nd century and extends to our days; paintings and objects of applied art from different centuries are collected.

Permanent exhibition

The Art Museum (Sochi) carries out exhibition activities in all its diversity. Permanent exhibition consists of the following sections:

  • Russian art of the period 19-21 centuries. The exposition presents canvases of such masters as I.K. Aivazovsky, V.D. Polenov, I.I. Shishkin, V.I. Zarubin et al.

  • Silver and edged weapons of the period of antiquity. The section is based on archaeological finds discovered during excavations conducted in the upper Mzymta River. The materials found were combined under the common name - "Mzymtinsky treasure." It included household items, weapons, horse harness made of silver and other metals, with a rich delicate decor. Most of them belong to the Sarmatian and Greek peoples who inhabited the lands of the Black Sea region.

  • Painting of the 20th century, where paintings are combined with the theme "Russian open spaces." A large collection of paintings in various performance techniques, reflecting the beauty of Russian nature.

  • Graphics 19-21 centuries. The exhibition hall presents the work of V.A. Serova "Woman's Portrait", B.M. Kustodieva "Sitting Nude", several watercolor works of M.K. Sokolov and other artists.

Exhibitions

Every month, the Art Museum (Sochi) holds exhibitions and other cultural events. Usually, vigorous activity begins with the advent of the tourist season in the city. Last year, 2016, residents and guests were invited to thematic vernissages, such as “Your whole back is white. Based on the works of P. Kulinich ”, where the photographs of O. Hirsanova, dedicated to the Day of Laughter, were demonstrated. Also in May, the Kuban Museum Festival was held and the performance “Museum Masterpieces” was organized. On May 24th, the All-Russian Design Forum and other events took place.

By the current year 2017, an equally interesting program will be prepared, the main character of which will be the Art Museum (Sochi). Exhibitions, festivals, forums, quizzes will create the atmosphere of a holiday of culture and history.

Each exhibition hall of the Sochi Museum of Art becomes a treasure for the younger generation. Excursions aimed at schoolchildren bring a lot of new and interesting knowledge to children about their hometown, country, tell about the value of art paintings, as a reflection of the time and personality of the master.
