For the first time, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovich tried her hand at politics in the early 90s. At first, she held several posts in the Croatian Democratic Union (CDU) party, to which she joined in 1993. After completing her education in Washington, DC, she returned to the Balkans and joined their parliament. Grabar-Kitarovich also worked as the country's ambassador to the United States and as an assistant to the NATO secretary general before defeating Ivo Josipovich during the presidential election.
