Museum History

Like many art galleries in Russia, the Kaluga Museum was originally a private collection. The meeting belonged to the local physician Nikanor Ivanovich Vasiliev. In 1918, he organized an exhibition in his house on the street, which now bears the name of Dzerzhinsky. After the death of the first owner, according to his will, the collection of paintings passed into the jurisdiction of the city. The collection was supplemented and transformed into the Art Museum. It, as an independent cultural object, existed until 1924. Then it became a department of the Kaluga United Museum, which included all the museums of the city. In 1939, the gallery regained its independence.

During the Great Patriotic War, many masterpieces stored in the museum were lost. However, most of the exhibition still managed to be preserved, so in 1944 the gallery again opened its doors to visitors. In the same year, the museum was given its modern name - Kaluga Regional Art Museum.

And in 1969, the museum was waiting for a big move - the former Bilibin estate was transferred to the cultural center - a stunningly beautiful building, a monument of architecture of the nineteenth century. Here the museum is located today.

The Kaluga Art Museum hosts a variety of excursions, the choice of which depends on the age and interests of the group. On a classic sightseeing tour you will be told the history of the museum, taken through the halls of the gallery, and shown the most vivid and memorable paintings. Thematic programs suggest a more detailed description of the art of a given period: the museum has a hall dedicated to ancient Russian art, an exhibition of paintings by Russian painters of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and masterpieces of Western European painting are also exhibited here.

Older children will be interested in various quests. They take place on the territory of the museum and are connected with its history.

Judging by the reviews of the Kaluga Art Museum, such excursions are not only for children, but also for adult visitors. So this is a great place for a family pastime.

It is worth remembering that in addition to the permanent exhibition at the Kaluga Art Museum, there is a building in which temporary, constantly changing and updating exhibitions are located. Here can be represented both the works of famous masters of their craft, as well as the work of little-known, but no less talented artists just starting their career.
