Graham Purdy, a photographer from Northern Ireland, shoots dramatic wildlife portraits of Africa. For his new book, Eight Feet, Purdy used a remote-controlled car to get up to two meters from wildlife in Kenya and Uganda. From lions to gorillas, many animals can be dangerous, but Purdy’s photographs show the more peaceful side of these terrestrial creatures.

Wildlife photographer

It is known that most of the animals appearing in his new book are deadly, but photos of lions, hippos and elephants show a more peaceful side. His book is called “Eight Feet, ” because all the images were made within 8 feet (two meters) of these magnificent creatures.

Purdy in his interview spoke about how he manages to get so close to animals and make unique photographs.

Purdy has been taking wildlife photographs of Africa for about 20 years. In his last book, he decided that he wanted to try something else, as close as possible to predators. Work on the book took him about 18 months and took several trips to Africa. Most of the images in the book were made in Kenya and Uganda.

“This is a very slow, almost hidden type of photograph, ” Purdy said in an interview. “You can't go fast, you can't chase around the neighborhood.” Animals simply see this as threatening or strange behavior. It scares them away and repels them. ”
