The Lipetsk Regional Museum of Local Lore was founded over a century ago. Through active educational activities, employees organize numerous events for children and adults. The museum has a theater studio, part of the excursions is carried out interactively.

History of creation

The initiator of the creation of the local history museum was Dr. M. Trunov. He justified the need for a public education project in a report that was submitted to the City Council of Lipetsk in 1907 for consideration. In it, Trunov argued the need for the creation of the Peter the Great People’s House, part of which will be a reading room, Sunday school and a museum. The arguments were convincing, the city administration approved the project of creating an institution on a voluntary basis. A group of interested parties was included in the board of trustees of the Petrovsky Society of Scientific and Practical Knowledge, and Mayor M. Klyuyev became the chairman of the group.

To implement their plans, one of the premises in Fedorov’s house was rented. In May 1909, stands of a historical and ethnographic exhibition were opened in a library with a reading room. The city residents took an active part in the formation of museum funds. More than 200 people made significant contributions to the first exposition. By the end of the first year of the museum’s existence, over 800 items were stored in the collections; next year, the collection numbered more than 1, 500 exhibits.

After the revolution

The history of the Lipetsk Regional Museum of Local Lore did not stop even after nationalization. In 1918, on the basis of the Petrovsky Society, the People's Museum was opened. During this period, funds were generously and abundantly replenished with requisitioned property from the estates of the nobility and landowners, city apartments and houses. The institution was given paintings, sculpture, porcelain, furniture. The collected collection became the basis of the art department.

Expanding collections required impressive space, and the Lipetsk Regional Museum of Local Lore moved to more spacious premises with a total area of 300 square meters on Voronezhskaya Street (now - Sovetskaya St.). In 1919, the total number of visitors to museum halls was about 5 thousand people. Over the entire period of its activity, the museum has been moved many times, the longest period, about 60 years, falls on the placement of halls and funds in the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ.

The status of the Regional Museum of Local Lore Lipetsk was assigned in 1956. Since the transfer of the cathedral to the church community, the former Political Education House has become the new building for exhibits and foundations. The museum is located here today.
