Ancient cemeteries are found in many large cities of our country. Most often, these are memorial territories on which mass graves have not been carried out for a long time. And only in rare cases, the places where people have been buried for more than a century remain fully operational. This category also includes the Marine Cemetery in Vladivostok. It is one of the oldest in the city, burials on it are carried out in our days.

The official date of foundation of the cemetery in the Pervomaisky district of Vladivostok is 1905. It was called at its discovery the Brotherhood Sea Cemetery; at first, sailors and military personnel who died in battles were buried here. At that time, the whole territory was divided into two sections: garrison and marine, and it was very easy to find the right burial place. According to some reports, the first graves on the site of the modern Sea Cemetery appeared back in 1902. At that time, employees of lower ranks, as well as officers who died as a result of accidents and suicides, were buried in the new "non-prestigious" cemetery land. Adjustments to the development were made by the Russo-Japanese War, it was then that the first mass graves and memorial burials appeared on Morskoye.

Temple at the Sea Cemetery

Three years after the official opening on the territory of the cemetery was erected a "Temple-monument to the sailors, drowned and killed on the sea." The author of the project was engineer Andrey Isanov. Archbishop Eusebius consecrated the church in the name of the icon of the icon of the Mother of God, "All Who Sorrow of Joy." The sea cemetery was originally organized as a military cemetery, but already in 1912 it was officially allowed to carry out civil burials here. Very soon, a female monastic community of Hodegetria Smolenskaya was organized at the temple. The sisters lived right in the cemetery territory, in a specially built house, looked after the graves and buried the deceased. In 1928, the Marine Cemetery was transferred to the municipal department of public utilities. At the same time, the monastic community was disbanded, the temple building and the communal house were used for some time for household needs.

List of famous burials and historical sites

During the construction of the temple, a memorial site was organized near it for the most honorable burials. Here, the ashes of the lower ranks of the legendary cruiser "Varyag" brought from Korea were reburied. Nearby are the mass graves of sailors of the ships Tiksi, Bolsheretsk, Tavrichanka. The sea cemetery boasts a large number of ancient tombstones and interesting sculptures from an artistic point of view. A gravestone made in the form of a fragment of a mast installed at the burial place of Evgeny Panko-Maksimovich is striking. In the Soviet years, cultural workers, scientists and party workers were buried with the greatest honor. Such famous people as V.K. Arsenyev (traveler), A.I. Shchetinina (entered the history of the world as the first woman - the captain of the voyage), M.V. Gotsky (polar captain), A. V Teleshov (artist), G. G. Khaliletsky (writer). A separate historical site is the burial place of Czechoslovak legionnaires.

Sea cemetery (Vladivostok) today

Vladivostok is a large city in which today there are two cemeteries open for burial. All others are memorial. One of the existing ones is the Marine Cemetery, whose territory is about 80 hectares. For convenience, division into sections is used, and each grave has its own number. However, there are rumors that the numbering here is not entirely correct and it is very difficult to find the burial place. But despite some confusion, the cemetery is quite well-maintained. It is always clean here, paths are cleared, garbage is removed and taken out. In 2002, a crematorium was opened at the Marine Cemetery. A columbarium appeared with him. Also, on the cemetery territory, you can rent tools for refining graves, order the manufacture of monuments and fences.
