History
During the period of the National Revival and at that moment when the cult of antiquity gained popularity, in the Czech Republic they decided to create a place where all the collected relics could be stored. So at the beginning of the nineteenth century - in 1818 - the National Museum appeared. Prague received another magnificent architectural structure in its piggy bank.
By order of the museum manager, politician and historian Frantisek Palacki, various scientific articles began to be published. They joined the ranks of library collections. In addition to them on the shelves you can find literary works of the Middle Ages and the manuscript of Vaclav Hank, who is known in history as a great falsifier.
The museum's collection has steadily increased, replenished with new exhibits. It was not possible to fit them in one building. Thanks to this, thematic departments appeared in different parts of the city: the Museum of Music, Africa and Asia.
Exterior
The main museum building was built over five years. The author of the project was the famous Czech architect Josef Schulz. Under his leadership, other buildings appeared in the country, made in the style of the Neo-Renaissance. The architect also built villas and was engaged in the architecture of garden plots.

Once there, you can immediately notice the building - it is a dominant structure, clearly standing out against the general background. And this is not surprising. It’s hard not to notice a giant more than seventy meters high. And the total length of its facade is more than one hundred meters.
In the center rises a beautiful dome with a panoramic roof. It is in this place that a collection of busts and statues of outstanding historical figures of the Czech Republic is collected. Four more domes are located at the corners of the building.
Interior
The interior of the museum leaves a vivid impression.
Firstly, a magnificent hall with a ceiling height of as many as two floors, decorated with sculptures. Their author is the famous master Ludwig Schwanthaler. The walls are decorated with paintings.
Secondly, a huge staircase leading to the Pantheon. Only two women were honored to be part of the collection: Bozena Nemtsova and Elishka Krasnogorsk. All the rest are male.
Turning right after visiting this hall, you will be taken to an exhibition of the prehistoric and early period of the Czech state. The exhibits in it have not been updated for a long time and have not been replenished with new ones. Therefore, it can be considered quite outdated.
Following it, tourists get acquainted with the history of creating money in the Czech Republic and the moment of national upsurge in the state, which fell on the XIX century.
The wing, located in another part of the museum, has a huge collection of minerals and rocks. A person who is not sophisticated in this matter will be surprised at the variety of colors and shades with which inanimate nature is filled.

Thematic parts of the museum

- Background and protohistory. A dish from Nikosten, a bottle from the port of Puteolo, a silver horn covered with gilding are the most famous and valuable exhibits of the department. In addition to them, a variety of objects are collected that were used more than one thousand years ago. These are objects of classical archeology and collected during Czech field studies.
- Numismatics. What is interesting from this area can the National Museum (Prague) offer? Magnificent coin collections are kept here. The first exhibits appeared thanks to Count Sternberg, who donated them to the museum. The hall contains samples of coins of the entire historical period of the Czech Republic. There are also collections of foreign money. The oldest and most valuable of them belongs to classical antiquity.
- Theatre. This department initially belonged to the library, but was able to grow into an independent collection. Here are samples of theatrical costumes, design, music, from the middle of the XIX century to the present day.
Development
Over the years, the museum has accumulated unimaginable reserves of cultural and historical values. Today, his collections are located not only in different parts of the city, but also beyond its borders. Music, books, cultural objects of other nations - all these exhibitions attract attention and have incredible cultural value.
Now the National Museum (Prague), which is open all year round, is closed for reconstruction. It started back in 2011 and will last until 2015.
In the course of the work, it was planned to unite several buildings in the museum complex located next to the main one.
There will be special recreation areas for children, cafeterias, lecture halls and a spacious observation deck that overlooks magnificent Prague.
National Technical Museum
Enthusiastic about engineering and technology, people will certainly visit this place. But even children and the average layman will be interested here. The National Technical Museum in Prague gathered exhibits under one roof that will tell about the history of the camera, printing, transport, astronomy and military equipment.
One hundred years ago, the Czech Republic was famous for its technical achievements, which caused the pride of the whole people. And how not to boast about your capabilities in such a situation? Especially in order to demonstrate scientific achievements, a whole museum was opened.
After several decades, the exhibits became quite a lot. Because of this, it was decided to create a more spacious structure that can accommodate all the collections. The current appearance of the museum has not changed since the completion of its construction in 1942.
Collections
A separate large pavilion is reserved for transport. Here you can not only admire the huge exposition, but also touch the exhibits. Some cars presented at the exhibition previously belonged to famous personalities. In addition, there are a great many bicycles, airplanes and several trains.
