How many proverbs and sayings are there in the Russian language with the word arrogance: “Insolence is the second happiness”, “Insolent give free rein - he will want more”. This word is mentioned several times even in the Bible, but what does it mean?

Meaning of the word

The noun "impudence" is a word, descended from the adjective "impudent". A character trait is akin to impudence and insolence. It manifests itself in a direct look at point blank range, raising a voice or tone, trying to embarrass the interlocutor in any way. Most often it is the result of impunity and awareness of security, a sense of superiority over others due to high social status, self-confidence or despair.

In other people, arrogance causes contempt, irritation, or a desire to oppose.

From the old Russian "arrogance" the word "arrogance" came about. The meaning of the word was then somewhat different - "fast, fast." Knowing this, you already look differently at the established expression: "Look, how fast!" You can safely say: “Look, how impudent!” - and the value will not change.

The main signs of arrogance

Who is most often called insolent? After all, this quality has very wide and blurry boundaries. Some call arrogance arrogance, while others call excessive confidence.

So, an impudent person is one who is characterized by the following qualities:

  • complete disregard for the opinion of society, the norms established by it, if the latter stand in the way of the goal;

  • without a shadow of embarrassment, a person can take what does not belong to him if he wants;

  • insolent puts his interests above all else. Behind him is no respect for elders, love for children or women. If a person needs it, he will "go over the heads";

  • if they make a remark to an impudent person, he will remain silent or begin to be rude, but his tactics of behavior will not change;

  • there is completely no sense of shame, and do not care what you think;

  • persistent and demanding, there is still the expression "takes it in a snap";

  • constantly intervenes in the affairs of others, while imposing a point of view, even when not asked.

Is being insolent good or bad?

Of course, if arrogance is something like the absence of shame or self-confident impudence, then for others it is bad. But today, when the world belongs to self-confident people, the word "arrogance" also means full confidence in the actions performed by man. The main thing is that there is no inconsideracy in relation to opponents. In this vein, this concept has a positive connotation.

The antagonism of “positive” arrogance is self-doubt and fear of taking a step towards a change in life. At its core, arrogance and insecurity in one's strengths are sides of the same coin.

Insecurity and arrogance: are they close?

So what does the word "impudence" mean? Its meaning becomes more understandable if we decompose arrogance as a manifestation into its components. It immediately becomes clear that the insolent is often just an insecure person. Only in order to prove to himself and others that this is not so, an insecure person begins to show arrogance.

He has a hypertrophied sense of “importance”, and in order to confirm to himself that he is irreplaceable and priceless, the insolent (read - unsure of himself) seeks to humiliate others in order to excel in his eyes. No one to humiliate? And the locker will do, kick it, there is nothing to stand in the way of such an "important" person. And the insolent self asserts itself out of fear of experiencing humiliation. Note, the insolent will never begin to humiliate a person if he feels strength and power in advance. Self-preservation instinct slows him down.

When impudence comes into confrontation with wisdom, it is like meeting an elephant and a Pug. The wise elephant does not need to affirm itself; it is confident in itself, its strength. Therefore, he is so calm. A mongrel always barks, but inside her every tremor trembles. She, brute force fear, asserts itself.

One impudent can not understand for himself that the price is “worthless” to “strength”, which rests on the “weakness” of others. In fact, strength lies in the ability to achieve one without pressure and humiliation of other, weaker ones. Insolence is a complete misunderstanding of oneself and one's needs.

Why are we annoyed by other people's arrogance?

What irritates everyone is what lives in us and we do not like or are forbidden. In other words, the impudence of another person annoys us because it lives in ourselves. We ourselves would be happy to assert ourselves at the expense of others, but we do not like it when approved at our expense.

But being arrogant is not so bad if we restrain this trait in ourselves, suppress it and let it out in the form of confidence. As soon as an understanding of oneself comes, another's insolence, the meaning of which we understand, ceases to annoy us.

What benefits can bring

If you have a “positive” arrogance, it can even help you in something. There are five aspects to the positive impact of this quality on you and your life:

  1. Your self-esteem will increase. Often, public opinion and clichés driven in childhood prevent a person from starting to act. And if there is still self-doubt, the fear of getting an opinion that you are just an impudent person is holding back a person from moving forward. Spontaneous actions help to increase appreciation in one’s own eyes (the main thing is that actions should not be directed to the detriment of another person).

  2. Your situation will improve. After committing a rash act, we often reproach ourselves, feel guilty, but time passes, and we understand that this rash act was the most correct. So, arrogance is what helped to solve the situation, which was simply unrealistic to solve in another way.

  3. Life begins to change. Read the stories of successful people, and you will notice how many examples there are when such “arrogant”, rash, committed on intuition actions led to a radical change in the whole course of life. Career began to go uphill, wealth grew, success came. And people just did what others thought was unacceptable. That is, they were arrogant.

  4. Desired is achieved. Often people discuss other people's requests. It so happened that in our time it is considered: to ask is to humiliate oneself, and if you ask for yourself, it’s just unacceptable arrogance. But successful people look at the request in a completely different way. You just need to ask the right people in the right way.

  5. The emergence of perseverance in action. Often, our perseverance is taken by others as impudence. But is that right? Even the Bible says: "Knock - they will open for you." And if the desired result is obtained and you celebrate the victory, is the opinion of others so important?
