Nicole Margaret Blonsky was born on November 9, 1988 in New York (USA), in the family of a school assistant and a municipal worker. She has a younger brother named Joey. The family did not live well and could not afford singing lessons for the girl, however, fearing to miss the child’s obvious talent, at the age of eight she was still given to vocals. In 2006, eighteen-year-old Nikki Blonsky tried her hand at an audition in a Broadway production. She didn’t pass this audition, however, director Adam Shankman noticed her there and invited her to the main role in the film adaptation of Hairspray.
The film takes place in 1962. Tracy Turnblad is a charming fat woman, a high school student who loves dancing and performs on local music TV shows. In the midst of black segregation, she advocates integration, because she knows firsthand what it means to be “not like everyone else”. The role was very close to Nikki, since in acting classes she was the only girl who was overweight, but her talent and diligence helped her to succeed.
The actress performed all the musical and dance numbers in the film on her own, for which she was praised by critics. Nikki was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the category Best Actress (Comedy or Musical).
