In 1918, on November 20, a child was born in the Ratgen family living in Bremen. The midwife, who took birth, for a long time could not determine the gender of the newborn, but in the end announced the birth of a boy. After a couple of minutes, having examined the baby's genitals, she changed her mind and said that a girl was born.
Nine months later, the doctor, who examined the baby, hesitantly informed the parents that they were still raising a girl, and then added: “Be what happens. There is nothing you can do about it. ”
Childhood and youth
The child was called Dora and raised as a girl.
When Dore turned ten, she herself no longer considered herself a female and did not understand why her mother bought her dresses. She is a boy! Every year it became more and more obvious. Dora spoke in bass and looked more like a young man, but her parents did not want to notice this. And their daughter, meanwhile, decided to devote herself to sports and even won the local high jump championship.
When the athlete was eighteen, she was invited to the German Olympic team. Over time, she became one of the best athletes. In 1936, at the Olympic Games, Dora took 4th place, and two years later she won a gold medal in competitions of European importance. In the same year, the athlete set a world record in high jump.
