The youngest city in the Moscow region is the birthplace of the Russian airship building, but is better known for the fact that the famous Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology is located here. A modern and comfortable city has everything you need for a comfortable stay. Dolgoprudny is located in the immediate vicinity of Moscow.

general information

The city is located in the northern part of the Moscow region, the southern and eastern regions have practically grown together with the northern regions of the capital. In the west, city blocks adjoin the Moscow Canal (on the other bank of which Khimki is located), the Klyazma River flows in the north, and the Klyazma Reservoir is located.

The city received its name from the Dolgoprudnaya railway platform, built in 1900. The name comes from the "long" (in the sense - long) pond located near the station in Vinogradovo, the ancient estate of the Pushkin family. In the XIX-XX centuries. this area becomes the center of suburban summer construction. To get to them, the Dolgoprudnaya stop is organized, in the vicinity of which the formation of a holiday village began.

Within a few years, the elings, a gas plant, shops, residential and public buildings were built. In 1935, the settlement received the official status of a working village and the name "Airship."

During the war years, Dolgoprudny produced Po-2 aircraft, light aircraft designed by A.S. Yakovlev, a diving bomber Pe-2, Su-2 and Tu-2 bombers, and night near Yak-6 bombers.

In the postwar years, enterprises of the military-industrial complex began to develop in the city. MIPT was opened in the 50s, the building of the radio engineering faculty and a residential building for employees were built. At this time, the construction products plant, machine-building plant, and the automation design bureau also began to work. In 1957, the village received the status of a city of regional subordination, active improvement, construction of housing and cultural facilities began. In 1959, the population of the city of Dolgoprudny reached 32, 959. The number of city dwellers has grown due to the attraction of labor resources from other regions of the country to developing defense industry enterprises. In addition, the village of Vodniki was attached to the city.

In 1963, Dolgoprudny became a city of regional subordination, several villages were annexed, including Shchapovo, Gnilushi, Kotovo and Likhachevo. Defense industry production expanded. In 1966-1971 The Dogoprudnensky Machine-Building Plant (formerly Dirigablestroy) produced 506 An-2 M aircraft, and from the late 60s began to produce air defense systems.

In 1970, the population of Dolgoprudny grew to 53, 095 people. In the last decades of Soviet rule, the city developed rapidly. The enterprises operated at full capacity, exporting products to many countries around the world. New jobs were filled with specialists from all regions of the country.

Modernity

In 1986, the population of Dolgoprudny reached 70, 000 for the first time. In the post-Soviet years, industrial enterprises of the city fell into a period of protracted crisis. The volume of defense orders decreased, which caused a reduction in jobs. For many months, enterprises did not pay wages. The number of citizens declined until the 2000s.

The recovery and growth of the country's economy in subsequent years allowed updating the social infrastructure. Housing construction was actively conducted; proximity to the capital benefited from this process. Modern retail chains, cultural and sports facilities were built. In 2008, the population of Dolgoprudny was 80, 500 people.

The global economic crisis, which began in 2008, had a particularly strong effect on the construction industry and the real estate market of the city. At the same time, this negative impact was largely offset by an increase in orders in the military-industrial complex. In 2016, the population of Dolgoprudny for the first time exceeded 100 thousand, reaching a value of 100 567 inhabitants. According to 2018 data, 108, 861 people lived in the city.
