Surely everyone remembers the famous "riddle of James Filimore, " who once left his home and did not return. But the case described by Arthur Conan Doyle is far from the only one. Sometimes people disappear in unclear circumstances, and this is a fact. Statistics call huge numbers: about 4.5 million people, and this is only in the last 20 years. And if the fate of the average person most often worries only his relatives, then celebrities are watched by thousands of eyes. However, even universal attention does not always help reveal the secret of extinction. And this, in turn, causes a lot of rumors and speculation. Here are a few of these puzzles.

Amelia Earhart: The Riddle of Line 157-337

Image

The name of this brave American woman, writer and the first woman pilot in aviation history thundered the whole world in 1928, when she flew across the Atlantic Ocean by plane. And only 8 years later, in 1937, all the radio stations of the world started talking about her again. But, alas, for a completely different reason: the plane on which Amelia and her navigator Fred Noonan flew was missing somewhere in the Pacific Ocean.

The idea was incredibly daring: the plane had to fly around the globe with several stops for refueling. The last leg of the journey began in New Guinea, in the coastal city of Lae. Pilots had to overcome a huge route (about 11 thousand kilometers) and land on Howland, a small island in the Pacific Ocean.

Along the way, Amelia and Fred maintained radio contact with the Itaska boat waiting for them near the island, reporting their location. The weather conditions in that area were very bad, which interfered with the signal flow. Brave travelers circled the raging ocean. But waves swept over a small island, not allowing him to see it from the air. The last words that the world heard from Amelia Earhart were torn and almost illegible due to a broken communication radiogram:

We are on the line 157-337 … I repeat … I repeat … we are moving along the line …

The connection has not recovered. The searches carried out over two weeks yielded no results. The fate of the two brave pilots-travelers remained unknown. In 1940, in the shallow water near the small Pacific atoll Nikumaroro, fragments of the fuselage and human remains were discovered, and some researchers believe that they belong to the famous pilot. However, it has still not been possible to confirm or deny this version.

Michael Rockefeller: eaten or missing?

The son of a millionaire, whose name became a household name long ago, was an ethnographer and specialist in anthropology, quite famous in his circles. However, he received real fame not because of his discoveries or the money of his father, but because of the tragic disappearance in the wilds of New Guinea.

The young man was fond of history from childhood, and after entering Harvard University he decided to connect his life with anthropology. In 1961, everyone who knew this brilliant young scientist was sure that his dream had come true: with his colleague from the Netherlands, Rene Wassing, Michael landed in New Guinea. They had to explore a fairly large area, to visit several local tribes. Accompanied by two guides, scientists visited several villages, each exchanging small items taken with them for food and household items. The collection, according to Wassing, was compiled very impressive.

Last time, Michael Rockefeller was seen near the village of cannibals of the Asmati tribe. The boat on which scientists and their guides sailed turned over not far from it, and after an argument, the Dutchman, along with the guides, turned back. Michael sailed on alone. No one else saw him. It is believed that the cannibals killed and ate him, but this version still remains unconfirmed.

"I would not shoot …", or the Fate of the Pilot

It is unlikely that you can find a person who did not read the "Little Prince" Antoine de Saint-Exupery in his childhood. But this world famous poet and writer in many ways wrote the hero of his tale from himself. He was a talented pilot and took part in the hostilities during World War II. July 31, 1944 he was sent on a mission to conduct aerial photography near the Alps. It was the last day that the writers were seen alive. The plane did not return to the airfield, and the fate of its pilot remained unknown for many years.

After the war ended, searches were conducted that did not yield any results, but gave rise to the most fantastic versions of the disappearance of the pilot and writer. There were speculations about an accident in the Alps, desertion, and even getting into a spatio-temporal rift. They also considered the theory of suicide: two days before the last raid, Antoine was forever suspended from flight; for him, raving from heaven since childhood, it was like death.

But on September 7, 1998, the captain of the Horizon, a passionate diver, dived into the Mediterranean Sea. At the bottom, he found a bracelet on which the names of Antoine de Saint-Exupery and his wife Consuelo were engraved. In the course of further searches, already in 2000, a plane was discovered not far from this place.

And after 8 years, an interview was published with the former German pilot Horst Rippert, a fan of Exupery. He said that on July 31, 1944, he attacked a French plane and saw it fall into the sea. This belated revelation of the old man was prompted by the versions that again surfaced in the press about desertion and suicide.

“I did not see the pilot, only later I learned that it was Saint Exupery, ” the former Luftwaffe officer admitted. “I would never shoot if I knew who was at the helm.”

Alas, this revelation added even more confusion to the mystery of the disappearance of the writer. The fact is that in the archives of the German Air Force no information was found about the planes shot down on July 31, 1944.

Latest photos of Sean Flynn

This talented artist is much more famous for his daring reporting than for movie roles. Although he began precisely as an actor, deciding to follow in the footsteps of his famous father, Errol Flynn. He starred in 10 films. But he quickly realized that he did not want to live in the shadow of his father’s fame, and decided to change his profession, focusing on a career as a photojournalist. The choice was successful. Pictures of Sean instantly gained loud (and sometimes scandalous) fame, often printed in major publications. He covered the events in Vietnam and other hot spots, joined the operational units of the special forces. More than once he found himself in the very center of the battle, each time using every opportunity to take a good shot.

Basketball player Brian Williams became famous in the world of sports for his eccentricity. Often his strange actions led people familiar with him to bewilderment. Here, “Bison Deal” ended his sports career at the age of 30, being at the peak of form and at the peak of fame, and only two years later went missing under the most strange circumstances.

In June 2002, Brian, in the company of his girlfriend and brother, decided to take a trip around the Pacific Ocean on his yacht. On July 8, friends visited Tahiti: this was the last time a basketball player and his girlfriend were seen alive.

In September, a yacht with bullet marks was found. A few days later, the police detained Brian’s brother with a large sum of money and documents of the athlete. The young man was charged with murder. However, he himself did not admit his guilt, and no traces of the missing were found.
