The history of the institution dates back to the reign of Catherine the Great, who, continuing the work of Peter I in the field of training of domestic civil engineering personnel, issues a decree on the creation of a mining engineering school in St. Petersburg. For the new higher educational institution, the state bought two houses from Pyotr Borisovich Sheremetev on the corner of the 22nd line of Vasilievsky Island.
From the beginning to the 60s of the XIX century, the school was first reorganized into the Mountain Cadet Corps, and then into the Institute of the Mining Engineers Corps. And by 1811, Andrei Voronikhin’s masterpiece project, constructed in the then fashionable classicism style, was erected to his needs.
By 1818, the All-Russian Mineralogical Society already existed at the Mining Institute and a joint museum was organized.
Monument Symbol
The former serf of the Stroganov merchants, Russian architect Andrei Voronikhin, created the building of the Mining Institute in the style of an ancient Greek temple. His high multi-stage stylobate is decorated with sculptural compositions based on the plots of ancient Greek myths: "Hercules strangling Antei" by S. S. Pimenov and "The Abduction of Proserpine" by V. I. Demut-Malinovsky. Amazing sculptures were carved from stone by the artel of the famous stonemason Samson Sukhanov. And the bas-reliefs of V. I. Demut-Malinovsky "Apollo, who comes to Vulcan for a chariot" and "Venus, requiring the volcano of Mars armor" continue the antique theme. The above plots were chosen for a reason: these myths are connected with the underworld, the forces of the Earth, and the kingdom of the blacksmith Hephaestus.
In the courtyard, the architect placed sculptural images of sphinx girls guarding the treasures of thought and the treasures of the Mining Museum. All decorative elements emphasize the importance of the Mining Institute as a temple of engineering and a treasury of human knowledge about the earth and its bowels.

The idea of creating another metro station, which is so necessary for St. Petersburg residents, has already begun to become reality. In 2015, work began on laying a tunnel behind the Dybenko-Teatralnaya Station section. The new station, which had two initial design names: “Oblique Line” and “Bolshoy Prospect”, associated with the location of the future lobby, has now received its final name - “Mining Institute” - located near one of the oldest universities in the city. The Mining Institute metro station in St. Petersburg will be part of the Lakhtinsko-Pravoberezhnaya line and will become another deep-seated station, like many stations of the St. Petersburg subway, due to the geographical features of the territory on which the city grew.
