Geography of the Republic of Togo

The northern part of Togo is a vast, sometimes hilly plain. The central part is located on a plateau that has a height of about 300 meters above sea level. The southern part of the republic is occupied by plains and individual blocky mountains of small height (up to 610 meters). They form chains stretched from southwest to northeast.

Most of the territory is covered by savannahs. Evergreen forests grow in mountainous areas and river valleys. The equatorial jungle occupies only a twentieth of the country. In addition, their area is reduced due to clear-cutting. A common species of woody plants are huge baobabs growing in the savannah.

The Republic of Togo has sufficient mineral reserves. There are deposits of graphite, iron ore, uranium, gold, bauxite and other valuable elements. Despite this, Togo is one of the poorest countries in the world, and there is no economic development.

State structure

Togo is a republic in the form of government. The head of state is the president, who is elected by voting and rules for 5 years. Parliament is the national assembly. The President has the authority to dissolve him. The National Assembly is also an analogue of our Duma. It includes 81 deputies and consists of one chamber. Every 5 years, elections are held, on which its composition depends.

Togo population

In 2010, the population of this country amounted to 6.2 million people. Population dynamics is characterized by almost exponential growth. About 2.7 percent is added each year. They live a little: men are 58 years old, and women are 62 years old. A rather significant proportion of HIV-infected people.

The population is represented by 45 tribes of the indigenous black population.

In historical and cultural terms, Togo maintains the greatest ties with France and Germany.
