slightly acidic soils. It has a conical crown and reaches 30 meters in height. It grows very slowly, for a long time, while living up to a thousand years, reaching maximum productivity by 200-300 years.
A bit of history
The name of the tree was not formed immediately. Tsuga received the first name from Karl Linnaeus in 1763 - Pinus canadensis. The fact is that although it belongs to the pine family, it is very similar to fir. And for a long time, the nerds could not determine which family it actually belongs to. Later it was noticed that the plant is a transitional link between these families. As a result, the Japanese name was chosen, since several species of this tree grow in Japan. The first to use the modern name of the Canadian Tsuga was the scientist Eli-Abel Carrier in 1855.
Appearance
Thanks to the wide cone-shaped crown of thin weeping branches, the tree has an elegant appearance. A high, even trunk is almost two-thirds of its length devoid of branches. In an adult tree, the trunk diameter can reach 120 centimeters, to the top it gradually narrows. The young bark has a reddish or dark brown color, with age it darkens and a grayish tint is added. In old trees, the bark flakes gradually exfoliate. The bark itself becomes coarse, with deep furrows and up to 2 centimeters in thickness. The needles are small, flattened, dark green above and lighter below. Canadian Tsuga cones are small and beautifully hanging.
In the service of man
In North America, wood has found widespread use. It is used in large volumes in the woodworking industry of Canada and the USA, many pulp and paper enterprises in these countries use its wood as raw materials for the production of paper and cardboard. Tsuga Canadian is also used in medicine and for the production of cosmetics. The board of this tree is lined with saunas, and tannin, used in the leather industry as a tannin, and natural dyes for subsequent coloring of the skin are mined from the bark.
Tsuga Canadian Nana
This slow-growing landscape shrub in Europe has been used since the 19th century. At a height of about 1 meter, its crown grows to 2 meters in diameter. It is growing slowly, the annual growth is only 4 centimeters. Feels good both in the sun and in the shade, successfully tolerates frosts. It is used in ground grass, heather gardens and on rocky areas of park zones.
