Archaeologists from Tultepec (a city and municipality in Mexico, part of the state of Mexico) recently discovered, as they believe, the first adaptations of people for hunting mammoths. The BBC World News Agency reports that these traps, which are at least 15, 000 years old, contain the remains of 14 long-extinct animals, including 800 bones, which makes this find significant. In addition to mammoths, a horse and a camel were trapped.

Discovery of scientists from Tultepek

Scientists suggest that ancient hunters used torches and branches to drive prey into pre-prepared earthen ditches. The depth of such a pit is 5 feet, 6 inches (about 170 cm), and a width of almost 25 meters. In order to carefully study this place, it took about 10 months.

Rethinking Some Scientific Provisions

It was previously believed that the hunt for mammoths was random. No one deliberately tracked these animals. These findings, according to the director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico Diego Prieto Hernandez, fundamentally change the scientific understanding of that era. The existence of these traps confirms the claim that hunting for mammoths in some cases was a carefully planned and well-prepared event.

In fact, new archaeological evidence is a turning point in world science and our ideas about the life of distant ancestors. The conviction of Mexican researchers, eager to discover other ancient traps to the world, gives an additional intrigue.

Excavations conducted near the airport under construction are significant in that such a number of remains in one place is extremely rare. In 1970, when laying the city metro in Mexico City, the skeleton of a mammoth was found. This suggests that at least 5 different herds of these animals lived side by side with a person thousands of years ago in this place.
