Victor Garber is a Canadian theater, film and television actor. Among moviegoers, he is known as the performer of the role of Thomas Andrews in the drama Titanic, as well as for the role of Greg in the melodrama Sleepless in Seattle.
Biography
The future actor was born in the Canadian city of London in 1949. His father is Joe Garber, his mother is an actress and singer Hope Garber. In addition to Victor, the family had two more children - Nathan and Alicia.
The boy began his acting career at the age of 9, playing small roles in school theater productions. And in 1965, after graduating from high school, Victor entered the University of Toronto, where he studied theatrical art.
Theater career
In 1972, Victor Garber played Jesus Christ in the musical Godspell. It was this role that brought fame to the novice actor.
In 1985, he received a supporting role in Michael Frein’s play, “The Noise Behind the Wall, ” which was a great success and was staged many times in different countries of the world.
Since the beginning of the 90s, Victor Garber played on Broadway. The most famous of his works in that period:
- the play "The Deadly Trap", based on the book of the playwright and writer Ira Levin, the author of the mystical novel "Rosemary's Baby";
- musicals Sweeney Todd, Crazy Scaffolds, Killers.
And for his role in the 1994 Devil Yankees musical, actor Victor Garber was nominated for a Tony Award.
With the beginning of the 2000s, the actor paid less attention to the theater, deciding to focus on a career in the cinema.
Movie roles
For the first time, Victor Garber appeared on the screen in 1973 in the film adaptation of the musical Godspell. In the 70s and 80s, the actor starred a lot, though, mostly, he came across small roles in little-known films.
As already mentioned, the first successful film project with his participation was the melodrama Sleepless in Seattle. The main roles in this picture were played by Hollywood stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics and became a real box office hit, collecting $ 228 million at the box office with a modest budget of $ 30 million.
Sleepless in Seattle was followed by a role in the comedy The First Wives Club, in which the actor played with Diane Keaton and Sarah Jessica Parker. Garber got the role of a successful producer, who made a career thanks to the connections of his wife, and then left her for the young actress.
The most famous project in the filmography of Victor Garber was and remains the drama by James Cameron "Titanic", shot in 1997. The picture was simply a resounding success and collected at the box office an unprecedented amount at that time - more than $ 2 billion. In 2001, Victor Garber, along with Reese Witherspoon, starred in Robert Luketic's comedy "Legally Blonde." The actor played the role of Professor Kellahan, one of the teachers at Harvard.
In 2002, the actor played with Ben Kingsley in the fantastic melodrama Immortals, based on the teenage novel Natalie Babbitt.
In 2015, Garber again worked with Ben Kingsley, this time on the sci-fi thriller "Out of / Out". Critics didn’t really like the film, and, despite the stellar cast, it almost failed at the box office.
One of the latter is the work of Garber in the action movie "Sicario" Denis Villeneuve. During the filming of the film, the actor met such stars as Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin. The film pleased the creators with box office receipts - the box office amounted to 85 million, which is almost 3 times the budget of the film.
TV career
Since the beginning of the 80s, the actor worked a lot on television, playing mostly episodic roles. He received his first major role in 1985 in the comedy series "I Had Three Wives."
A year later, Garber appeared in one of the episodes of the popular thriller "Twilight Zone". In the same year, the actor played in the television science fiction film "Roanoke."
Also, Victor Garber played a supporting role in the crime series "Law and Order."
The most famous project in Garber’s television filmography is the Internet Therapy sitcom, which he worked on from 2011 to 2015.
