Rough elm (photos confirm this) is a very beautiful tree, large and with a lush crown, which is often found in our parks. Planted it not only one by one, but also in rows. Elm looks especially good in the alleys along with a stocky oak, burly linden or detailed maple. It has other names: elm bare, mountain elm. Scientists suggest that Russia and the Scandinavian Peninsula are the birthplace of this tree.
External features
Rough elm can reach 40 meters. His bark is smooth. It comes in two colors: gray or brown. Branches, usually of brown color, and leaves of deep dark green color form a large and dense crown. In its thick shadow it is cool even on a hot sunny day. The leaves reach 17 centimeters in length, they are especially beautiful in the fall, when they acquire an extraordinary golden color. Flowers bloom in spring. Brown or purple color makes them simply charming. Flowering lasts a week, but never less than four days. A distinctive feature of elm is that flowers always appear before leaves. Its fruits are small green winged wings.
Good growth conditions
Rough elm among trees is considered a long-liver, can exist for 400 years. Very fast growing, but demanding on living conditions. The most important conditions for its breeding are the presence of fertile loose soil, sufficient humidity and good lighting. But, nevertheless, the tree is great for city parks, because it quickly adapts to urban living conditions, it is quite gas resistant. Elm is able to withstand severe and prolonged frosts.
Periodically, he needs to do pruning to form a crown. The only big drawback is that the elm is amenable to Dutch disease. And the causative agents of this disease are elm sapwood. Therefore, the elm, despite its natural masculinity and noble resistance, needs human protection from these harmful insects in the form of various preventive measures.
Decorative forms
The tree propagates with the help of seeds. They are planted immediately after ripening. The grown seedlings can be transplanted.
Rough elm has a number of decorative forms. They depend primarily on the shape of the crown. On this basis distinguish:

- weeping;
- dwarf.
By the type of leaf blades, the following forms are distinguished: horned, curly, large-leaved. By the color of leaves: purple, dark purple and yellow.
Elm Rough Pendula
This is a decorative species up to 5 meters high with a crown diameter of about 10 m. Weeping densely branched branches descend to the ground with age. A tree blooms in May, but the flowers are small and not too catchy. The leaves on top are rough and have a dark green color, they are unequal and keep on short petioles. On fertile loose soils, they grow rapidly. Photophilous plant, frost-resistant. Easily tolerates pruning. Mainly used for single landings. But with some effort, you can form nice arches or tents from it.
