Every year, the capital of our homeland, Moscow, is becoming more and more beautiful. South Butovo is one of its districts, which belongs to the South-Western administrative capital district.
Around Butovo there are several legends. Why did the district get such a name? The history of this area is quite interesting.
origin of name
At least three legends go about the origin of the name of the district. According to one of them, Emperor Peter the Great presented these lands to the famous General Butov, since his surname and the name of the land surprisingly coincided.
The second legend says that for a long time a stone-sandstone quarry was mined in the area. Residential buildings and buildings were built from this material. Moreover, the laminated stone was transported to Moscow for the construction of boyars' chambers, temples and churches.
According to the third legend, the district was named after the brave Cossack by the name of Butov. Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich Romanov bestowed a vassal of land along with the village. Subsequently, it was named after this Cossack. Butov received such a generous gift for asking Cossacks to recognize Mikhail Fedorovich as sovereign.
District History
In 1339, the first mention of the area of Southern Butovo appeared in the annals. What district of Moscow was it in the XIV century? According to scientists, initially the area of South Butovo was covered with impenetrable dense forests, full-flowing rivers and deep ravines.

Gradually, the area was increasingly overgrown with settlements. These lands near Moscow retained the memory of more than one battle. In 1606, Bolotnikov’s army, consisting of rebellious peasants, boyars, and Cossacks, marched on Butovo to Moscow. A bloody battle with the enemy took place.
In 1812, the partisan detachment of Kudashov temporarily occupied the area of Southern Butovo. Which district of Moscow and from whom did the Kudashovites defend? Partisans exterminated Napoleon’s troops. After the war of 1812, villages and villages in this area disappeared and reappeared.
