Description
Abrau kilka is a medium-sized fish living in a freshwater environment from the herring family. The body reaches nine centimeters in length. The weight of one fish is ten grams. Abrau tulk lives no more than two years. It feeds on small zooplankton.
Breeding
At the age of one year reaches puberty. The body length at this time is from three to five centimeters. Spawning begins in May and lasts until October. As a rule, this happens after sunset, at night. The temperature of the water for favorable breeding is at least twenty degrees.
At one time, the Abrau tulka, the photo of which you see in our article, can bring over thirty pelagic eggs. Their development is carried out at a very fast pace. From the moment of ripening of eggs to hatched fry no more than twelve hours pass. After that, they themselves sink to the bottom. Habitat
Often this kind of fish is found on the closed lake Abrau, which is located near the city of Novorossiysk of the Krasnodar Territory. Another subspecies

Why is the number decreasing?
Until the end of the fifties, this species of herring fish was considered massive. When catching, up to two hundred pieces fell into the net of trawls. After the nineties of the 20th century, the number decreased due to the appearance of predatory fish in the lake. And after the zander was infiltrated into this place, the number of kilka completely decreased tenfold.
What is happening with this kind of tyulka now?
At the moment, the lake is not protected and is not in the conservation area. Measures for the protection of kilka are not taken. In the near future it is planned to conduct a wide survey of the water area of Lake Abrau. If during the research work the presence of tyulka is detected, then it will be possible to estimate the abundance of this subspecies and carry out the mandatory cryopreservation of the genome.
Reconstruction Measures
At the moment, a program is being developed on how to conduct a comprehensive study and restore the population of tulka. To do this, it is necessary to artificially reproduce the species, acclimatize it in freshwater or a reservoir.
The water temperature in it should correspond to that in Lake Abrau.
In order to preserve the appearance of tyulka, it is necessary to reduce the number of predatory fish. First of all, this is zander.
