early years

Justin Chung was born and raised in California. His mother is a pianist and a housewife. His father, Sun, worked in show business, was an actor in South Korea and often appeared in black and white films. As a child, Jung often watched his father’s films, which inspired him to start an acting career.

Jung was educated in his hometown of Irvine, where he played the saxophone in a school orchestra, after which he entered the University of Southern California at Los Angeles and earned a master's degree in business administration. As part of the course, it was compulsory to study a foreign language, and therefore he began to learn Japanese, and later switched to Korean (his mother’s native language). To improve his language skills, Chong spent some time in South Korea as part of a university study abroad program. For the first semester, he lived in a hostel at Yonsei University in Seoul.
