In 1991, he was elected to the regional council of people's deputies of the Altai Territory. And three years later he became a deputy of the Legislative Assembly of this republic. By that time, Surikov already had significant authority among his colleagues. Therefore, it easily gained the support of other parliamentarians and took the chair of the speaker of the Legislative Assembly.

At the very end of 1996, Surikov managed to win the election of the head of the Altai Territory administration. In this post, he was replaced by Lev Aleksandrovich Korshunov, who became the head of the region two years before on the recommendation of President Boris Yeltsin.

Surikov was not just fighting in a popular vote with Korshunov. He had good connections in Moscow. So much so that the subsidized budget of the Altai Territory began to receive tangible help from the capital. It was Korshunov who, thanks to his good relations with the then Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin, achieved the adoption of a government decree on state support for the Altai Territory to overcome depressive phenomena in the economy.

According to this decision, the federal Ministry of Finance annually determined the personal amount of subsidies for the Altai Territory, taking into account the crisis in its economy. The region received this money in addition to the minimum subsidies from the federal budget to most Russian regions and republics.

In addition, the governor Korshunov achieved a solution to the long-standing problem of the Altai Territory. The region has finally been gasified.

Despite this, Surikov won the popular election. In 2000, he was re-elected to this post.

Governor Activities

After winning the gubernatorial elections, popularity became popular among Alexander Alexandrovich Surikov. "Who is he?" - No one else asked that question.

Surikov led the region for 8 years. During this time, experts noted the economic decline that occurred in the province. Monthly delays in salaries began at large enterprises and manufactures; in the economic rating of Russian regions, Altai slipped into the basement itself - to 78th place. Factories at that time were closing in hundreds. And this is in the place where a real industrial boom was observed several decades ago.

Surikov Alexander Alexandrovich, whose biography is given in this article, frankly admitted that his administration simply did not have enough money. As a result, state employees did not receive salaries, roads were not repaired.

Obviously, under the leadership of Surikov, the economy of the Altai Territory did not manage to adapt to new conditions. She was actually on the verge of collapse. A lot of criticism at that time was expressed against Surikov Alexander Alexandrovich. Compromising material appeared periodically in the local press.

It was possible to survive exclusively through federal subsidies. Only with their help, when Surikov was built, a new bridge over the Ob river was opened, the regional clinical hospital, which was so necessary for the region, was opened, new schools and kindergartens were built and commissioned.

The Surikov era ended in 2004, when he ran for governor for a third term. On the eve of the election, the governor joined the United Russia party, but the support of the Bears did not help him. In the first round, none of the candidates managed to get more than 50% of the vote. And in the second round, Surikov lost to comedian and TV presenter Mikhail Evdokimov, well-known throughout the country.

Having been defeated, Surikov did not immediately go into the shadows. He got the place of assistant to the plenipotentiary of the president in the Siberian Federal District. In this position, he just oversaw the Altai Territory.
