German settlement

In the 18th century, a German settlement was located near the Baumanskaya metro station. At that time, there were 340 yards in the settlement. Not only immigrants from Germany lived here, but also citizens of other nationalities, the Dutch, Baltic and Austrians. A settlement was formed under the reign of Ivan III. Then it was the outskirts of the capital.

There were many high-profile specialists and various professions, blacksmiths, doctors and jewelers, many of whom the king invited to the center to carry out certain work. Trade was developed in Sloboda, on the market you could buy almost any spices, fabrics and fine wines.

History reference

Basurman crypts in Moscow appeared during the plague riots. People were dying en masse, whole streets, there weren’t enough places in cemeteries. In a previously formed cemetery for foreigners in German Sloboda, Russians began to be buried.

Initially, the cemetery was located on the Sinichka River (which has remained to this day, but is hidden in a pipe made of concrete). It was designed entirely in the Gothic style and is very similar to the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris. It was founded in 1771 and was originally intended for the burial of persons of Catholic or Lutheran faith. For this reason, he was called Inover.

Modern cemetery

Now the Basurman crypts are closed and looks like a picturesque and quiet corner among the noisy and bustling modern city. You can wander around the territory for hours, looking at ancient inscriptions and gravestones in the Gothic style. And sitting on a bench, think about the essential and the transience of existence.

City's legends

There are many urban legends associated with the Basurman crypts. There is a myth that it is in this place in Moscow that you can hear the sounds of a flute at the moment when the sun sets and oblique shadows lie on the tombstones. And in the very middle you can hear the sounds of shackles, and in ghostly silhouettes you can see a woman in a long dress with a chic headdress and men with army swords and in uniform.

Another legend says that under the cemetery there is a whole city, in which there are a huge number of catacombs and dungeons. But you can get into this ghostly city only through one of the tombs, but no one knows through which one.

There is another story that the shadow of General Gordon roams the territory of the Basurman crypts. He can not calm down, because he can not find his grave.

There is still an interesting legend that at one time some woman after the death of her husband could not calm down and practically spent the night in the cemetery, asking the Lord to resurrect him. On one of the days a lone man approached her, like two drops of water similar to her deceased husband and they stayed together. Naturally, this was not a resurrected husband, but only a man very similar to him. Since then, many Muscovites come here, write their wishes on tombstones, hoping that they will come true.

Spouses Plo

One of the most widespread and mysterious legends associated with the cemetery is the story of the spouses Leon and Sofia Plo. When Leon found out that his wife was secretly meeting with her lover, he turned to a stone carver and ordered an interesting figure. The statue depicted a half-dressed woman who secretly crept on a date, in the woman’s hand was a stone rose, whose petals fell to the floor (now the flower is broken by vandals). After making the sculpture, the husband came home and killed his wife, and then himself. After the funeral, a stone woman was installed on the tombstone of Sofia Plo.

Famous and not very people

It is a little-known fact that it is in the cemetery of the Basurmans crypts that there is the grave of the famous chef Lucien Olvier.

There is an obelisk in the territory, which was installed in honor of the soldiers who died during the battle of Borodino.

Another grave in the cemetery is known - the old man Zacharias, who, according to the beliefs of some people, can fulfill his wishes if he is mentioned in his prayers.
