Burshtyn TPP is a large export-oriented thermal power plant in western Ukraine. The plant has 12 power units, the design capacity of the enterprise is 2400 MW. It is part of DTEK Zakhidenergo.

History reference

The construction of the Burshtyn TPP began in the early 60s with the goal of providing energy to the western regions of the Ukrainian SSR and exporting large volumes to Eastern European countries. The first 200-megawatt unit was commissioned in 1965. Over the next 4 years, 11 more power units of similar capacity were commissioned. The total capacity of TPPs amounted to 2400 MW.

Company Profile

The main fuel for the Burshtyn TPP is gas coal. Its share in the fuel balance of generating production is 98.4%. The specific gravity of gas and fuel oil in electricity production is about 1.6%. They are used at thermal power plants to ignite coal. At the station and in contracting organizations performing various repair work, more than 3, 000 people work.

To provide the power plant with technical water on the river. Rotten Lipa created a cooling pond with an area of ​​1260 hectares. Such large volumes of water heated by thermal power plants create a favorable microclimate in the district. Energy export

In 1995, the implementation of a program to integrate a number of power plants in Western Ukraine into the UCTE pan-European energy system began. This is due to an excess of capacity inside the Ukrainian energy system and the desire to simplify the export of electricity. The association, consisting of the Burshtyn TPP, Tereblya-Rikskaya HPP and Kalush TPP, was called the Burshtyn energy island. His entry into the EU UCTE took place on 1.07.2002. In addition to Ukrainian consumers, electricity is supplied to residents of Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and other countries.

Environmental issues

Although harmful emissions have declined significantly in recent years, the Burshtyn TPP remains the main culprit in the region. Gaseous emissions, especially sulfur dioxide, are hazardous to health. In 2008, 217800 tons of unsafe substances were released into the atmosphere. Of them:

  • 179, 700 tons of sulfur dioxide;

  • 25300 tons of particulate matter;

  • 11, 500 tons of nitrogen dioxide;

  • 1100 tons of carbon monoxide.

Despite the environmental danger to the surrounding settlements, TPP remains the main taxpayer of the region. Significant funds are allocated for the Burshtyn administration to improve the environment. This money goes to the reconstruction of sewer networks, the purchase of equipment for public utilities, landscaping of streets and other environmental events that the city needs.

The environmental situation is constantly monitored by the factory environmental department. The large-scale replacement of electrostatic precipitators carried out at TPPs over the past eight years has significantly reduced the amount of harmful emissions. In addition, the station currently operates on less than half of its capacity, only 4-5 of the existing 12 units are permanently involved.

Modernization

DTEK Zakhidenergo carries out phased modernization of power units. In 2015-2016, all twelve industries were scheduled to be repaired at TPPs. In 2015, about 400 million hryvnias were spent on repairs. However, the debt of the state-owned company Energorynok to the thermal power plant for generated electric energy in 2016 amounted to 1.1 billion hryvnias, which covers the costs.

The last unit repaired by power engineers in 2015 was No. 7, it is already included in the power grid. Measures to restore the operability of the main and auxiliary equipment began on 10.29.2015. This power unit has been in operation for half a century. In 2012, it was reconstructed, a significant amount of work was done to replace the thermomechanical and electrical equipment.

The need for repair of power unit No. 7 at this stage was due to the completion of the restoration of the design scheme of the powder systems of the unit. The implementation of some equipment repair work allowed optimizing the fuel mode of the boiler, which ensured the necessary performance of the powder systems during the operation of power equipment in the winter.

The measures taken and the introduction of some changes in the technological process allowed to abandon the use of expensive reserve fuel - gas and fuel oil. Since 2012 (since privatization), DTEK has invested more than $ 180 million in updating and upgrading the equipment of the Burshtyn station.
