Here was founded the first dining room (later - a restaurant) for writers. And for fans of creativity and connoisseurs of literature, the Central House of Writers has become a kind of temple of literature. Indeed, several generations of Muscovites and guests of the city considered it to be a literary meeting for happiness and honor, and this was perceived as a bright event of their whole life, along with a visit to the Taganka or the Bolshoi.

By the way, Povarskaya Street, on which the building itself was built (in 1889), until the revolution was considered one of the most aristocratic in Moscow, and among the homeowners there were princely and count families. Here, in the mansion, the most influential noble-Masonic lodge in Russia was also gathering. The house itself, resembling a castle, was made in a modernist style of a romantic direction. The last private owner is Countess Alexandra Olsufieva, the wife of the general, nee Miklashevskaya. She lived here until 1917, and after the revolution she was forced to leave for emigration.
After October, the urban poor settled in the house. In 1925, the house is occupied by the so-called “children's” department from the All-Russian Central Executive Committee, in 1932 the building was transferred under the auspices of writers. The Central House of Writers itself - the House of Writers - was founded in 1934, after the 1st Congress of Soviet Writers and - then - the formation of the USSR Joint Venture. Since then, the legendary and famous club has become a real haven for many famous people of the Soviet and post-Soviet era.

Who has not been only to the Central House of Writers for many years of his hospitable existence! Here poets read their poems for the first time, argued, celebrated holidays and anniversaries, celebrities such as Tvardovsky and Simonov, Sholokhov and Fadeev, Okudzhava and Yevtushenko, and many others ran around to drink a cup of coffee. Here, meetings were held with hero cosmonauts led by Gagarin. Niels Bohr and Indira Gandhi, Gerard Philippe and Marlene Dietrich, Gina Lollobrigida - actors and scientists, world-famous public leaders also visited these walls. Countess Olsufieva, the granddaughter of the former owners of the mansion, who donated her books: Old Rome and Gogol in Rome, also flew to the Central House of Writers. Some visitors to the House formed legends, which later fell into the media and books. Today, the House of Writers is open to all, and anyone can go there. Here, literary events and festivals are still being held, films are shown and concerts are played.
