Many Russians remember this building from the events of the August 1991 coup. There was a confrontation between the GKChP and supporters of Boris Yeltsin, here the future first President of the Russian Federation made his speech on the tank tower.

The building was dubbed the White House by journalists after the sad events of October 1993, when B. Yeltsin ordered the tanks of the Taman Division to open fire on the building where members of the Supreme Council of the Russian Federation and the Congress of People's Deputies were. Fired by tank volleys, the burning Government House of Moscow was seen by millions of television viewers from all over the world.

Then the building went through a major reconstruction in 1993-1994. He was prudently surrounded around the perimeter by a massive fence in order to prevent mass rallies near the White House.
