James Edward Tripleton was born in 1973 in Warfedale (Yorkshire). Relatives and friends call him Jim. The director has a younger brother, whose name is Robin, and their father served as the navigator of the Royal Air Force. As a teenager, he went to the cinema and was so much fascinated by cinema that he later entered the London University of the Arts. He has a doctorate in fine art. He is currently teaching at the aforementioned university.

In 1998, James Tripleton became an assistant director in the movie "Express in Marrakech." This is a story about two little sisters, one of them seven, the second five years. They travel with their mother, who is a hippie. The family is heading from London to Morocco. They are faced with many adventures, new experiences and interesting culture along the way. The story is narrated on behalf of the smallest girl, and you can see how she watches life, how her mother seeks freedom and love, and her older and more determined sister, Beah. However, James was not credited.
In 2000, the series was filmed under the name "The Dark Kingdom." This picture is an anthology of horror. Each episode tells its own eerie and certainly scary story. James Tripleton took part in the filming of the 1st episode.
