Kaliningrad is one of the most mysterious, inaccessible and interesting cities of Russia. It is surrounded by foreign countries, has a rich history, beautiful nature and a lot of attractions.
Where is Kaliningrad located? Geographic features
Kaliningrad (until 1946 - Königsberg) was founded in 1255 on the banks of the Pregol River, or rather, at the place where it flows into the Baltic Gulf. The city is the westernmost administrative center in Russia - the capital of the Kaliningrad region, which borders Poland and Lithuania in the south, and the Baltic Sea in the north.
The place where Kaliningrad is located belongs to the southeastern part of the Baltic coast. It is predominantly flat territory, abundant in lakes, streams and ponds. Only the northern points of the region rise slightly above the rest.
A distinctive feature of Kaliningrad and the region is the climate. Here it is a continental sea. Winter is warm enough (frosts - up to minus five), summer is rainy. September is often colder than its "big brother" October, which pleases with golden sunny weather.
The main characteristic of the city
Knowing where Kaliningrad is located, one can guess some features of its “character”. Since this is a city on the water, port life boils in it. And historical upheavals painted a surprisingly contrasting portrait of Kaliningrad.
It harmoniously combines two cultures - Russian and Prussian. This is reflected in everything - both in architecture, where Soviet and European styles are intertwined, and in the behavior of people who are sometimes restrained and German are meticulous, and are open, welcoming and emotional, like true Slavs.
In total, about 430 thousand people live in the city. They work in the fields of metallurgy, printing, light industry, fisheries and, of course, in the port, seafaring and tourism industries.
Kaliningrad region is the only Russian resort on the shores of the Baltic.
