The beautiful mountain country of Norway is a real find for travelers and lovers of natural beauty. This is an amazing area in northern Europe with fancy fjords, clear lakes, fabulous glaciers, high peaks, noisy waterfalls. Travelers can watch from here the endless expanses of the sea, fish in small village rivers. It was in this area that troll tales sprang up. The narrow corridors of the bays and the rocky walls of the mountains of Norway are not indifferent. Photos of these places are simply mesmerizing.
Features of the Norwegian mountains
The burdens of urban life, the Norwegians have always forgotten in the mountains. On weekends or on vacation, people must run to the heights. Where else can you enjoy such fresh air? It is here that you can see stunning panoramas from an altitude of 2000 m above sea level. Norway is famous for its serrated, impregnable elevations and sloping, smooth rocks. Many residents of the country have their small cottages in the mountains.
The landscape of Norway is spectacular and contrasting; the highest peaks of Northern Europe are located here. It is very easy to approach the Norwegian peaks, as marked trails are laid everywhere.
In winter, the area is covered with snow, putting on a white outfit. The whole country begins to put on ski slopes. Many are familiar with the magnificent Norwegian ski resorts.
In the eastern part of the country (near Sweden), the mountains are more gentle. In the western region, they sharply lean towards the Atlantic Ocean. In the south of the Scandinavian country there are gentle and steep slopes, between which lies a vast upland. It is Norway that is famous for its fjords, winding sea bays, crashing into land and forming rocky shores. Sometimes the cliffs of the fjords reach a height of 1000 m.
The main mountain regions
In Norway, there are seven main mountain regions:
- Jotunheimen National Park. There are many peaks with a height of more than 2000 m. The highest mountain in the region is Galdhöppigen (2469 m). The nature here is very picturesque, full of rivers, lakes, waterfalls, glaciers and flowering valleys. In the park you can find many cyclists and climbers. Fans of horseback riding, caving, canoeing also chose this area.
- Hardangervidda Mountain Plateau. In the west and north of this region, mountains stretch, as well as the Hardangeryökülen Glacier. The plateau decoration is the original cap-shaped mountain - Horteigen. It is here that the country's most popular cycling route with a length of 80 km is located ("Digger Road", or Rallarwegen).
- The Finnmarkswidd region is simply buried in flowers and greenery. Here lives the indigenous population of Norway - the Sami. In this area there are two national parks with a pine forest. Every year you can watch the dog races in teams. In winter and autumn, the northern lights can be seen from here.
- The Lüngsalpen mountain range is located 300 km from the northern circle. Many local peaks grow out of the fjords, forming gorges, lakes, rivers and glaciers. This northern area is very cold. In addition to the northern lights from the array, you can watch the midnight sun.
- Slopes of the Sunnmer Alps. Many freeride lovers know these famous peaks that rise above the fjords. Most often, tourists climb Mount Slogen (1564 m above sea level). There are a lot of fish in local water bodies.
- Rondane National Park. There are several peaks above 2000 m. The park has preserved pristine picturesque surroundings. It is in this area that wild reindeer live (no longer in Europe). The most famous tourist route is the Troll Trail. It is known for its long ski run of 170 km.
- Dovrefjel region. This national Pilgrim Dear National Park, which runs between Trondheim and Oslo, is popular. Favorite activities for the population are rowing, fishing, canoeing and rock climbing.
Scandinavian mountains of Norway
The Scandinavian mountain system affects Norway, Finland and Sweden. The entire mountain system of Norway is part of the Scandinavian system. It has a length of 1700 km and a width of 320 km. On the slopes of the mountains spread taiga forests, peatlands, shrubs and meadows. There are a lot of minerals. The mountainous terrain is very diverse: longitudinal and transverse valleys are replaced by narrow ridges and serrated peaks. The most famous of them will be discussed later in the article.
Three mountain ranges
In the Utunheimen massif, the highest ridge of the Scandinavian mountains is located - Gallhöpiggen. It consists of crystalline rocks called gabbro. It is always icy and covered in snow.
In the central part of the country is the Dovrefjell Range. Its highest mountain is Snehetta (2286 m).
Another natural creation is the Seven Sisters mountain range. It includes seven peaks. It is from them that one can observe the kingdom of a thousand islands.

Abundance of glaciers
Many Norway peaks are covered in ice. Thick layers of snow sometimes reach 500 m. In the north of the country, the handsome Svartisen rises. Its height at the highest point reaches 1594 m.
The largest continental glacier in Europe is Justedalsbreen. Its highest peak reaches 1957 m.
In Norway, there is an ice sheet called Sorfonne. Its most famous peak is Broswellbrin, which has a length of 45 km.
On the northern coast of the island is located the Westfonn Glacier, an area of 2500 square meters. Its ice cover reaches 120 m.
The largest glacier on the island is the Land of Olaf V. In total, this ice sheet covers 4150 square meters.
