Basically, the registration marks of Russia are 1993 standards, the GOST of which is defined under the number 50577-93. Signs of vehicles of fixed-route, military, construction vehicles, diplomatic missions, trailers, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and motorcycles are somewhat different from each other. The article provides information about the differences between the signs on different types of vehicles, as well as the decoding of car numbers by region of Russia.

Standard rooms

Signs consist of 3 letters and 3 digits. The letters indicate the series, and the numbers indicate the vehicle number. In use, twelve letters are allowed, which have analogues in the Latin alphabet. On the right, in a separate square, there is a flag marked RUS and the code value of the region where the vehicle is registered. Previously, the appearance of the rooms was slightly different from the modern one, as it was manufactured using USSR technology. Then the plate itself was made of steel, and all the symbols on it were stamped, and the flag was missing. Modern technology provides for the presence of a background reflective film.

All numbers that are used are registered in a specific region.

In addition to the traffic police, there are other authorities that register certain types of vehicles.

Region code

Initially, like the regions of Russia, car numbers coincided with them and were counted from 01 to 89, as they are listed in the first paragraph of the sixty-fifth article of the Constitution. And in 1999 and in 2002 a complete code list was fixed by orders of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

They established that on vehicle signs belonging to the first type, the first digit of the region should be one. But in 2013, an order was approved by the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the city of Moscow, according to which, new three-digit codes were introduced in the capital, starting with the number 7.

However, the number of cars grew steadily, and some regions of Russia introduced car numbers additionally. Also, after the unification of the regions that passed from 2005 to 2008, the issuance of most numbers beginning with the eight was discontinued.

However, despite the innovations, previous numbers were not withdrawn, so even Soviet license plates can be found to this day.

Since the fall of 2013, the registration of vehicles began to be carried out differently. Under the new rules, the number can be saved even when the owner changes. Therefore, deregistration and registration were replaced by re-registration. Thus, transit numbers began to be issued only by cars permanently traveling abroad. Regions of Russia can now register a vehicle even of an owner who has permanent registration in another subject of the federation.

Types of characters

The order and meaning of the signs of the number on a private vehicle has already been described above. Therefore, we consider the signs installed on other types of vehicles.

So, on route vehicles, a format of 2 letters and 3 digits is used on a dark yellow reflective background.

Trailers use two letters and four numbers. On truck trailers, the vehicle registration sign had also to be duplicated before. However, since July 2008 this rule has been abolished.

A special square-shaped plate was made for motor vehicles. The number consisted of two letters located on the bottom line, and four numbers on the top. The region number and the inscription “RUS” were also indicated.

Agricultural machinery also had a similar sign, but only without the inscription “RUS”. Its registration is carried out by Gostekhnadzor.

Transit numbers are indicated by two letters, then three numbers, then another letter. They are made with suppressed glow in UV light, and also laminated to protect from adverse weather conditions.

But since the fall of 2013, amendments to the law were adopted, and their issuance was actually stopped.

Special numbers are issued for cars traveling abroad permanently. On the left side they can see a large letter "T".

Since 2002, special signs have been located on various vehicles belonging to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. A characteristic feature for them is a blue background and white numbers and letters. Four numbers are made for cars, three for trailers. The numeric code also indicates the region. But the code "77" indicates the belonging of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in general.

Trade missions of foreign companies, as well as diplomatic missions have a sign on a red background with white symbols.

The first 3 digits of the code and the letter following them indicate the country. In this case, the letter:

  • T - means administrative and technical personnel at the diplomatic mission.

  • D - the representative or consul himself.

  • CD is the head of the diplomatic mission.

Military units also have their own characteristic signs. They are made on black plates with white symbols. Basic information is on the right. Numbers do not mean regions of Russia. Car numbers show affiliation with the military district of the armed forces, type or federal authority of the IW, where military service is provided. Vehicle registration is carried out by the IAI.

Earlier, until 2002, special signs were intended for foreign citizens and were intended for vehicles accredited with the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs or representative offices of banks, firms accredited with ministries and departments.

Also, privileged signs were previously issued for civil servants and heads of state companies, public and religious figures. They were called "federal license plate numbers"; the regions of Russia were not indicated in them. Instead of a code value, the right square was completely occupied by the flag. The number consisted of a letter, 3 digits and 2 letters.
