Ryazan is one of the thirty largest cities in Russia. It is not surprising that it has a rich history, since its foundation dates from the 11th century. The city has a large number of attractions, architectural monuments, which determines its appearance. Along with modern buildings, mainly historical objects are concentrated in the center of the capital of the Ryazan region.

On the territory of the city, as well as in its environs, there are seventeen cemeteries. Among them, only two are closed for burial - Bogolyubskoe and Lazarevsky necropolis. 2 cemeteries - Voskresenskoye and Bogorodskoye are also completely open for burial. All others produce burials on the basis of family burials. Two more cemeteries are memorial. At the New Cemetery, burials of the deceased belonging to other faiths are made. On the territory of necropolises and cemeteries there are churches or chapels where memorial services are performed, as well as the funeral services for the dead.

Some of them work daily. On others, Sunday is a day off. According to the latest data, there is no crematorium in the city. The Sheremetyevo cemetery itself is located in the oldest village of Sheremetyevo-Pesochnya.

Short story

The village begins its history since the time of Ivan the Terrible and got its name from the Sheremetyevs estate, as well as the nearby nearby river Pesochenka. The most remarkable place in the village was the Trinity Church, erected in 1849, which functioned exactly the same on the territory of the Sheremetyevo cemetery. It ceased to function in the thirties of the XX century. The bell was dropped to the ground. The priests were repressed, and then were shot. After World War II, the building was used as a warehouse, and then it was abandoned and gradually destroyed. The remaining parts of the building were demolished in the 1980s.

A road was built at the site of the temple, as well as at the cemetery. However, most of the churchyard was transferred to the collective farm before the war.

What is the Sheremetyevo cemetery now?

Many trees grow in the cemetery. The territory is surrounded partially by an iron fence, partially by concrete blocks.

The old necropolis is currently open for burial. However, there is practically no free space for burial sites. Funeral rites are performed only for relatives of people already buried at the Sheremetyevo cemetery. In this case, burials are made only if there is space behind the corresponding fence.

In the center of the cemetery are the graves of the families of the villagers. At one grave site, one can find burials of several generations of the same family. But many of them have many empty spaces and are often not even half full.

Who is buried?

The oldest surviving burial site is considered to be a grave dated 1918. In the necropolis, the last refuge also found heroes of various wars, for example, Yu. I. Nikitin, S. Kalinin, I. Ivanov. However, at the Sheremetyevo cemetery there are many nameless and neglected graves. But for the most part, burial sites are monitored and looked after. Along with the old graves, fresh burials here, alas, are not uncommon. The first row of the cemetery is filled with graves of mostly young people.

According to city data, there are more than three hundred graves in the cemetery. Annually, funeral rites take place around ninety.
