One of the most popular professions, mysterious and fantastic, which almost all children of preschool age dream of, has been and remains the profession of an astronaut. Few people carry their thoughts through their whole lives and really reach the heights in the literal sense of the word. Oleg Artemyev fulfilled his dream.
How it all started
At the end of 1970, on December 28, a baby was born in Riga, the capital of the Latvian SSR. He was destined to become one of those daredevils who conquer space. The boy was called Oleg. No one thought then that he would become a hero.
School years passed for Oleg Artemyev in the city of Baikonur, which is located several hundred kilometers from Kyzylorda in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
After receiving a certificate of maturity, he moved to Tallinn and became a student at the school, where he began to master the equipment of industrial enterprises and installations. Upon graduation, he received a gold medal as an excellent student.
Then he decided to continue his education and in 1998 he became a student at the famous Bauman University in Moscow, where he studied technology, physics and their fields. A few years later, the need to study brought Oleg Artemyev to the Russian State Academy, which he, of course, graduated with a gold medal.
Activities before joining the space series
As you know, they don’t take anyone into space right away, this is a fact, and before replenishing the space ranks, Oleg Artemyev worked in a far from easy position as a test engineer. In his area of responsibility was working with technical documents, the latest techniques and equipment.
However, despite the complexity of the work, he was always in direct contact with acting astronauts. For example, he was an active participant in the physical and technical training of crews, was a member of the capsule maintenance team during landing. Often it was necessary to carry out tests of specialized clothing and equipment, including spacesuits.
In the cosmic ranks
The spring of 2000 brought Oleg Artemyev a new status. After undergoing general medical examinations, he gained access to special training. At the same time, preparations began for technical exams, which the future astronaut successfully passed in the winter of 2003. Already in May, he was accepted into the ranks of acting pilots and began general training, which ended with excellent results. July 5, 2005 Oleg Artemyev was awarded the title of test cosmonaut.
He completed a full training course not only for space flights, but also for emergency situations that can happen at any moment in space or when the capsule lands on Earth.
During his career, Oleg twice visited orbit with a total duration of 365 days, three times and had to go into open space.
He worked with such famous personalities as Stephen Swanson, Sergey Revin, Alexander Skvortsov.
