In Afghanistan, it is considered offensive and forbidden for women to ride bicycles. However, one non-profit organization gave Afghan girls fun on wheels. Skateistan is an organization that uses skateboarding to empower marginalized youth and save them from street influence. The organization’s goal is to turn children and youth into a community with the right ideals and goals.

“Learn to ride a skateboard in a war zone (if you're a girl)” - a short documentary about the organization’s mission in Afghanistan recently returned Skateistan to the headlines of national newspapers. Most recently, the film received an Academy Award for Best Short Film of 2020.

The Skateistan website says that more than 60 percent of their students come from low-income families and do not have access to education. Despite this, the organization believes that as soon as they connect children to the program, their opportunities will become limitless. Whether it is instilling a sense of confidence and independence through skateboarding or just informing them that they care, the program encourages self-confidence.
