Youth slang is constantly changing. However, some words live periods of decline and another heyday more often than others. One of such colorful representatives of argo was the word "dude." Many do not attach importance to him, calmly turning in this way to female friends or discussing a friend on the side. But is the term harmless as teenagers see it?
From male to female
Evolution is easily traced by the example of the version for the strong half of humanity. "Dude" exploited throughout the XX century. Oddly enough, in modern language the meaning of the word “chick” in everyday life has changed little and retained negative connotations. There are two versions of the origin of the original:
- gypsy “chavo” - “guy”, reworked by the efforts of thieves' jargon;
- abbreviation for "a person who respects high American culture."
The first version was formed in the 1920s, was used to interact with people of their own group or to appeal to strangers. And also with the “dude” it was possible to replace the name of the interlocutor, but only within the framework of his circle of contacts, otherwise it is a direct insult and a clear manifestation of disrespect, even a threat. The word “chick” existed in similar meanings, highlighting its carriers in a specific social group.
The second version gained popularity in the 1960s, in the wake of the heyday of the styc subculture. Fans of jazz, colorful clothes and crazy entertainment have given their meaning to the word. The “dudes” were the fighting friends of the Soviet revelry. There was still nothing wrong with such treatment within one particular group.

What could a representative of the thieves' environment do? She did not go to rob, rarely stole, had no access to serious money. And the manners were very free. The most common profession for such women was prostitution. The fact is reflected in the female version of the term. Philologists suggested: the beginning priestesses of love were often addressed in exactly the way that was imprinted in the people's memory.
