Red Panda can be called one of the most popular Internet animals. Rollers and memes with a cute animal gain a huge number of views, but the viewer does not know everything about him. And now, thanks to DNA analysis, scientists have also increased their knowledge of the red panda. As it turned out, this is not one at all, but two species.
Threatened with extinction
New studies are related to the survival problems of the Himalayan red panda. Previously, it was believed that the geographical dispersal of the animal had no basis for separation into species, but now this classification is supported by genetic research.
The natural habitat of the red panda is a mountain forest. Mostly these are the regions of China, Bhutan, Nepal, India and Myanmar. But in a separate order, experts investigate the survival problems of this panda against the backdrop of aggravated threats. Today, this is not only a reduction in the habitats themselves due to deforestation, but also targeted hunting.
According to experts of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Himalayan red panda is in the most difficult situation. The physical decline in the population along with the low level of genetic diversity in the group led to a very real threat of its complete extinction.

Ancient division
Scientists examined the DNA data of 65 representatives of the red panda, as a result of which two species were identified. It is assumed that the beginning of the division was laid about 250 thousand ago. Moreover, the researchers point to the existence of two different species, and not variations of one species.
Interestingly, until recently, the red panda was considered a relative of the raccoon. Then it was confirmed that it is a separate evolutionary species, and now a new classification is being formed.
Among the identified distinctive features, experts indicate physical characteristics and colors. For example, the Himalayan panda has a lighter face, while the Chinese one has red fur with striped tails.
