In July 6, 1994, the Supreme Council of the Republic adopted a resolution on the transfer of the capital from the city of Alma-Ata to the city of Akmola. And in 1997, the President of Kazakhstan N. Nazarbayev made a final decision. According to his Decree of 1998 (May 6), Akmola was renamed to Astana.
Since then, Astana City Day has been celebrated annually. At that time, this holiday was celebrated on June 10th. And in 2006, its date was changed and rescheduled for July 6. This decision is still causing some controversy for some people, since the birthday of the 1st President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, N. Nazarbayev, is also celebrated on the same day.
