About the museum

What can surprise the city of Murmansk? The art museum is its highlight. Before proceeding to a more detailed description, I want to note the beautiful building of the museum. It looks especially great in the period of snowy winters, as it turns into a real fairy-tale house - this is what makes winter Murmansk beautiful. The Art Museum, a photo of which we will see below, celebrates its birthday on January 17 - just during snowfalls and snowstorms.

On December 19, 1989, the first exhibition hall was opened, dedicated to the VII zone exhibition “Soviet North”. On January 17, 1990, it officially became the Murmansk Regional Art Museum. Then his collection was replenished with the best works of graphics, sculpture, decorative art and painting from the regional museum of local lore. Today the museum has more than seven thousand pieces of art samples. A large number of works presented painting of the XVIII, XIX and XX centuries, as well as hand drawings of Leningrad artists. Did Murmansk itself leave its mark in the museum? The art museum presents a large number of works by local artists and masters from all over Russia. Every connoisseur of Russian art will definitely appreciate the collection!

Murmansk, Art Museum: location

The art museum is located in the first public building made of stone, which was built back in 1927 and belonged to the Transport Consumer Society. In past years, the building was the heart of the public life of the townspeople, since there was the largest store and dining room. Unfortunately, during the war years it was badly damaged - the fragile glass dome was destroyed, but it was the main decoration. Contemporaries did not restore it, but the building itself was reconstructed when it was under the authority of the Department of Culture.

Museum Address

If you plan a trip to Murmansk, the Art Museum has the following address: Kominterna Street, 13. The work schedule should be recognized in advance, as changes are possible. In 1927, Comintern Street was a regular road with wooden log cabins on its sides. Then the museum building seemed a real high-rise against this background, since it stood on a dais and had, as we already know, a beautiful glass dome.

You can visit Murmansk at any time of the day or night. The Art Museum has a special mode of operation: Monday and Tuesday are weekends for visitors, and on Friday the institution is open from 11:00 to 19:00.

Murmansk contribution

A very rich section of the painting of the region. Here visitors can admire the works of B. Syukhin, N. Kovalev and A. Hattunen, as well as V. Baranov - chairman of the Union of Artists of Russia. Murmansk masters of decorative art are known throughout Russia for their amazing creations, and everyone can see their best works. The museum presents the works of T. Chernomor, E. Baranov, V. Zubitskaya and R. Chebaturina. The final exposition will introduce the observer to the northern crafts. It is known that the Kola North has always attracted the most creative personalities. It was they who left behind a cultural heritage worthy of respect and admiration. Fine examples of wood painting, clay toys, chiseled bone and wood carvings are just a few of the interesting things that every visitor to the museum will see.
